It's just a tradition. I personally call my aunt who has lived with us forever Nana..and my grandma is oma because she is from Germany and...she likes it that way. I called my Dad's mom granny, or gramma or something it. It depends on the family..it's a nickname, and kind of shows more of an intimacy w/ your grandparent then..if they were to just say Grandma or Grandmother. Down here in the south a lot of people call their grandma "me maw"..and their grandpa's papa..but it all depends on the family.

I do like it my mother decided to be Nana because that is what she called her grandma and her mom called her grandma and so on its not just a way to distinguish. Some families use it a sort of tradition it really is a personal choice and I will probably do it too.

It is a nickname...I don't like it though.

I think most people do this b/c some children have 2 sets of grandparents (father's mom and the mother's mom) so maybe one would be called grandma and the other is called nana...

sometimes they call the "great" grandma nana...it's easier for a child to say than to say Great grandma.
