Microsoft Office is not free. Try Open Office, a free alternative to Microsoft Office and is completely compatible with Office programs.

OpenOffice.org is a multiplatform and multilingual office suite and an open-source project. Compatible with all other major office suites, the product is free to download, use, and distribute.

That would be a miracle if you could because no such version exists. It must be 2007 they are using. All you need do is download the compatibility suite from Microsoft's site so you can open that version on your own computer but as you are a student you can get Office for around £70 which is well worth the money, even cheaper if you can prove you are a legitimate student and your campus is a participant in a student software scheme.

If you're a student and you know someone else that has Microsoft office you are allowed to copy it from their disc. I think up to 7 student copies are allowed. Otherwise you can't get office for free. But Google offers a free word and spreadsheet application. Search "Google Office."
