You didn't mention which course you need the dish for, but here are some ideas:

Appetizers: Giant prawns (store bought) on lettuce with cocktail sauce in a yellow bell pepper and slices of lemon.

Side Dishes: Candied yam casserole (2 large cans yams, drained, heated; 1/2 cube butter, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup chopped pecans. Mash them together and place in baking dish, top with marshmallow cream or mini marshmallows and bake until bubbling and golden. Green beans with bacon and onion (1 1/2 lbs fresh green beans, trimmed; 6 slices bacon, chopped; 1/2 yellow onion diced. Cook green beans until crisp tender. Saute bacon and onion until tender and translucent. Toss beans with bacon and onion and season with salt and pepper.

Salads: Ambrosia Salad: 1 can mandarin oranges, drained; 1 can chunk pineapple, drained; 1 bunch seedless green grapes; 1 cup shredded coconut; 1 cup mini marshmallows; 1 cup whipped cream.

Desserts: Gingerbread trifle: 1 box gingerbread cake mix; 1 large package instant lemon pudding; 1 container whipped topping; 1 large can pears, drained and sliced. Bake gingerbread according to package directions. Cool and tear into chunks; Make instant pudding using only half the milk. Add half of the whipped topping. Layer gingerbread with pudding and pears. Top with whipped topping.

Seven layer salad is kind of a classic simple recipe that requires no cooking other than bacon and hard boiled eggs. If you have kids, let 'em help, mine always get a kick out of helping to assemble this dish once I have everything chopped and sliced already.

In a 9 x 13 glass dish or large glass bowl, evenly spread about 3 or 4 cups of shredded lettuce or some of that ready to serve salad that comes mixed with grated carrots and and other vegetables in a bag. Then layer stuff evenly on top of that in pretty much any order: frozen sweet peas, hard boiled egg slices sprinkled with a little salt and pepper, sliced cucumber, sliced green pepper, sliced celery, sliced avacado, sliced onion, cooked and crumbled bacon, water chestnut and raddishes are pretty good in there too. Make as many layers as you like, it's just called 7 layer salad.

Whip together about 2 cups of miracle whip and 2 tablespoons sugar, spread all over the top to cover the entire salad. Then sprinkle shredded taco cheese and maybe some sliced olives on that to prevent the dressing from sticking to the saran wrap you're going to cover it with. If you have the time, make it a day beforehand and chill it in the fridge overnight, otherwise it's fine to make right before you eat it too.

How about green bean casserole?

Mix 4 oz green beans (the french style work best. I use frozen ones that have thawed but you can also use canned) with 1 can of cream of mushroom soup & 1/2 cup of milk. Bake at 350 for 25 minutes (or untill hot). Sprinkle french fried onions over the top. (they sell these on the canned vegetable aisle right above the canned green beans)
