A: Carcinoid tumors are a common primary tumor of the small bowel. It is not "always" cancerous as they don't start out that way. They fall into an unusual class of tumor that's somewhere between benign and malignant. They are very slow-growing, have the potential to become malignant and often do. Foregut carcinoid tumors occur in the first portion of the duodenum, the bronchus, the stomach and the pancreas. Midgut carcinoids occur in the second part of the duodenum, the jejunum, the ileum and the ascending colon.

B: Cortcosteroids such as prednisone or Decadron may be used on foregut tumors because these tumors tend to be responsive to this type of therapy.

carcinoid means cancer, so it is cancerous, and steroid is given to minimize the inflammation such a tumor causes in the small bowel.
