I am a single mother. I make just enough money to keep my bills current and keep food in my home. I have nothing extra for Christmas. My son is 2 years old and it breaks my heart to think I won't be able to give him any gifts to unwrap. I don't know how to go about getting assistance like this. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I would really like to thank everyone for the very helpful information. I have contacted the Salvation Army and they told me what I need to do to apply for "Adopt a Family".

To TryItOnce, I'm sorry you found my question so "appalling". I pray that one day you will be able to find happiness in helping others rather then tearing them down. As cheesy as this might sound, it may help you to remember the saying "If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all."

My heart goes out to you. My son is three, and my husband and I "adopted" a little boy our son's age last year. It was by far the greatest gift I have ever received to be able to give a little boy a nice Christmas. If you are in MA, we would gladly do it again for your little one. But since chances are you are not, start calling the Salvation Army and local churches immediately. They usually need to get the request early, so please don't wait. Ask about Christmas charities and explain your situation. There are plenty of generous people who would be happy to help you and your son. Take care and Merry Christmas!

Go to freecycle.org, that is where I and alot of other parents get rid of toys they dont need/want/ etc and lots of other things, just search for the one nearest you, great thing freecycle, I have never had a problem getting what I need nor getting rid of what I dont, I rarely have to buy anything. I just got rid of food on there literally anything can get and eventually will get listed. good luck, people tend to donate a ten dollar gift not considering buying a ten dollar cheaply made toy from the dollar store means it will most likely last only a couple months and then the child no longer has the toy to play with, though I have heard toys for tots has gotten nice donations, I do not personally get presents from them, no need to but I know people who do. Personally a well made toy in my opinion that is used is better than one that will break

Contact a local church group or Salvation Army and submit your name. This time of year a lot of corporations and individuals have an "adopt a family" for Christmas and will help you out.

Talk to your local dhs workers and they can give u advice. Where I live the police department delivers presents to needy children. They ask u what your child really wants and usually try to get it. At two years old he wont need a lot of presents try going to a salvation army or making a gift for him.

The salvation army and the hundred neediest cases stop taking applications by the first of October. You might be able to find a local church that would sponsor you on their giving tree. Watch your local paper because they often advertise charitable giveaways for childrens toys sponsored by small local organizations.

cut off your internet.. eat more soup.. never get coffee to go.. dont eat out much (if ever).. toss the cell phone.. live cheaply.. no cable..

you can probably afford some small things - kids dont look at price tags, crayons and a few sheets of paper.. some food items you know he likes.. but heck he is only 2 he wont understand much of what is going on so dont freak out about it..I am sure your relatives will give him something...

I was a single mom too.. I managed to live on minimum wage.. part time AND save up money to buy a house - you can do it also..

Contact your local social services department. You can apply for food stamps. They should also be able to set you up with box goods once a month or other programs as well.
