I had the exact same problem - even avoiding things with family members because I felt physically ill.
Here's what helped me - I went to an urgent care place - yes, they're expensive, BUT it's a random doctor who has never seen you before and will never see you again. Just be honest. Chances are, he'll give you BuSpar for 5 or 10 days, which is a pretty mild med to help treat anxiety. In that time you just make an appointment to see your regular doc. Hopefully the med will help you become brave enough to talk to your doc and to be honest. Believe me, my doctors have told me that this is actually more common than people think. I'm on a combination of meds right now - it might be a slow process, finding the right combination of drugs and THERAPY to work. Drugs are only a short-term solution, docs will cut you off without blinking an eye if you don't see a therapist because we really need to face our fears and overcome them - medicating ourselves with stuff that has the potential to become addictive can't be a permanent solution.
No respectable doctor is going to think you're just trying to get meds - they'll be able to tell. You've taken the first step, you've decided you don't want to live like this. Now, all uyou have to do is get help. Take a friend or family member with you, if it makes you more comfortable.

You have to force yourself to go to a doctor for this problem or have someone do it for you otherwise the problem will just get worse. No reason they would think you are a drug seeker. Several years ago I started to have horrible panic attacks when on the subway and it got to the point I would walk everywhere even if it took me hours....it took control of my life and I couldn't stand it so finally just went for help rather than live like that. I didn't need drugs...I was referred to an MD who also was a registered hypnotherapist (I thought that was hogwash), however, it actually worked after just a few sessions and it was the best thing I ever did.

well, you can cower in your home for the rest of your life, or you can take your fear by the horns and call a psychiatrist for help, I think you probably already know this. Consider the situation objectively, a psychiatrist will be able to tell readily if you are malingering or telling the truth, so if you tell the truth, there really isn't a possibility that they will think anything other than that you need some help and they will give it to you.

Your doctors absolutely will not judge you. They realize that depression, anxiety, etc. are very real and debilitating disorders. They don't even flinch when you break down and cry. They'll give you some tissue. Some of them (women doctors) will even offer to hug you. There is so much help out there for you that actually works, and not all of it is medication. Please ask your doctor for help so you can be happy again and get back into your life.

Can your primary care physician refer you to a psychiatrist?
If you want to get better you will have to seek some help
or this condition could worsen. Good luck.
