The whole "respect is earned" thing is BS. That would mean I'm to be disrespectful to people I don't know.

No, respect should be given until lost. You should treat someone respectfully until they prove to you that they are not worthy of it.

Well, by this I really mean basic courtesy so we probably don't really disagree. I don't give much weight to someone's idea unless they have proven themsevles capable of generating good ones.

Some people who believe respect is earned go too far, to the point of being an azzhole to people they don't know and justifying it this way.

"Respect must be earned" there is NO CREDIT RESPECT BANK!!

Why should respect be given until lost?

Please do not insult our intelligence, there is NOTHING for NOTHING in this life. In my opinion, those who believe otherwise are delusional.....

Exactly, what do you mean by.... that you are to be disrespectful to people that you do not know? Why?? Because you say so...... because there is no one forcing you!!
You are free to make your own choice the same as everyone else.

Also, this does not necessarily mean that one should be DISRESPECTFUL. In my opinion it is more prudent for one to reserve judgment until mutual respect had been established!

My question to you is... "why should one give people they do not know the advantage which leaves them at a disadvantage.... and if one did.... would that make them a
fool?

I am neutral until respect is earned. I don't know the value of a person by looking at them. I do not disrespect them that would be just as wrong as respecting them.

I believe that it works both ways. YOU GIVE respect to EARN IT. Once you EARN IT it's GIVEN to you. I give respect to those that diserve it. If I find they disrespect me, I don't give them any back or just stay away from it. I'm always curteous but there is always that one person that screws it up for you and thats where that person loses that respect.

According to the Ethics of Gary 7 Infiltrator, respect is given until lost.

Edited to add: Okay, I just lost respect for you when you changed your avatar to that scary pic.

I don't know if I agree. I think you may be basing your argument on an ambiguity in the meaning of the word "respect." (i.e. "Acting respectful to someone" isn't the same as "Being respectful of someone.")

I think neutrality is the best position at the outset, but that I should act respectful of people I don't know. (However, for me to "be respectful" of them, they must earn it.)

Everyone should be treated with respect until the privilege is lost, (though certain types of respect need to be earned.)

Trust should be earned.

Courtesy can and should be easily given. True respect, however, can only be earned.

A little backwards thinking don't you think. It's talking about how YOU earn respect not how YOU give or don't give respect.

Respect has to be earned, Common Courtesy is to be used at all times.

Like KRS-One from Boogie Down Productions said, "So please stop burning and learn to earn respect."
Rap is like set up, alot of games. Alot of suckers with coloful names. I'm so n' so, I'm this, I'm that. But they're all just (wick wick) whack. It's not about a salary, it's all about reality.
