You see in my family, my husband and I do not care for the traditional food. We all hate turkey, stuffing, cranberyy sauce.. and all of that. So at our hosue we have a little variety, Mexican food, hamburgers, macaroni and cheese, mini pizzas, hot dogs, chicken instead of turkey...

Our relatives got mad at us when they came to our house for Thanksgiving and saw that we were not serving the traditional meal and vowed never to come back to us again.

Do you spice up your thanksgiving away from this "traditional food" or do yo stick with the turkey and stuffing?

They got mad. Are you serious? It's food and they were your guests so It doesn't matter what you serve at your own table. Besides it's not like you served cat or dog food. Eat what you like.

YOU don't have to eat the traditional food, of course not. But since guests usually expect it (and look forward to it), you might tell them ahead of time that the meal is going to be a bit untraditional. Or else prepare turkey & stuffing along with the Mexican food & hamburgers so everyone will have something they like. That would be the nice thing to do. A lot of people cook ham for Thanksgiving instead of turkey.

My family does the traditional but since you guys don't like all of that stuff, I think you dinner is a great idea. I think that if I didn't like turkey and all of it and was having company, I would serve turkey along with what you guys like. I look forward to Thanksgiving because of the food so if I went to someones house and they made something else, I think i would be upset too. Good luck

My family mainly sticks to the traditional way. However, most of us aren't big on turkey so we have a small turkey breast and a big country ham. Oh, and no pumpkin pie either. Perhaps you can mix in a little traditional Thanksgiving with the variety that you are already serving?

I personally love turkey and dressing. I never get to eat it so having it on Thanksgiving is a treat for me personally. My aunt makes the greatest turkey and dressing I have ever eaten so I always look forward to thanksgiving food.

My husband is allergic to poultry so he never eats traditional thanksgiving food. (As usually not just the turkey, but the dressing and gravy are usually made with turkey products as well)
So he'll have a hamburger or pot roast or something else.

At christmas we actually eat Italian instead of turkey because my mom got sick of cooking two big turkeys within a month of each other. So Italian food has become our christmas tradition.

If you've invited others to your house for a traditional thanksgiving, then it is impolite. You can eat all that other food on a different day. There are so many traditional items to choose from, I'm sure that you could find something. Remember what the holiday is about...

If you don't have traditional food, the Turkey Cops and the Stuffing Patrol will come to take you away!

No silly, of course you don't have to eat traditional foods. My significant other and I said that if it was up to us, we'd have sushi.

However, I DO think if you are planning to have guests for Thanksgiving and do not plan to serve traditional foods, you should let them know ahead of time. Perhaps you can even work together to plan the menu: "Barb, we are so tired of traditional Thanksgiving food and want to do something different this year. What do you think of _________? Do you have any ideas for something we can do that's different?"

There will be 20 of us at my Aunts for christmas this year, and she caters for everyone. She'll do the traditional turkey a few types of meat and roast potatoes covered in herbs and garlic along with all the other traditional stuff.

But, she also adds other bits like jerk chicken, curry, rice guacamole, garlic bread and also macaroni and cheese etc..

She lays it out on a table like a buffet style and we all help ourselves, and funnily enough....... its normally the traditional stuff that gets left behind. So I don't see any problem at all, its all rather trivial to me.

The most important thing is that you have an enjoyable time with your family, it doesn't matter what your stuffing your face with!

If no one in the family likes the traditional meal, then there is no reason to serve it. You should eat something that everyone likes. But if you are going to invite other people, you should let them know beforehand because most people will just assume that they will be served turkey. Tell them what your menu is going to be, and then they can decide if they want to attend or not.

We do the whole turkey and traditional sides thing. The food you mentioned is more of a July 4th, Labor Day, or Memorial Day meal to me. However, at Christmas, my husband's grandma makes chili and one other dish, usually with chicken, because she knows we're all tired of the "traditional" foods by the time we're at her house.

To each their own. We're going out for Chinese this year, as my grandmother canceled Thanksgiving last year so she could go to the casino. It just doesn't make sense to cook that huge meal for just my husband and myself.

Might should have warned the relatives though that the dinner would not be the traditional fare, could have saved disappointment and hurt feelings had they known what to expect.
