Actually, there are quite a few more than this (Apollo, Hercules, Mithras, Krishna, etc). Joseph Campbell's Hero With a Thousand faces does a decent job of compiling some of them but his four-volume mythology series contains a much wider survey.
Essentially, Jung found that these elements in stories are archetypes of the unconscious that burst forth in humans naturally. After all, Bacchus is not copied from Osiris!
We can take this one of two ways in light of Christian truth claims. First, this theme is part of us and is ubiquitous because God is always telling us the same story of love, grace, connection, eternity. Second, these stories prove Christian mythology is bunk and is just the same old recycled crap.
CS Lewis, who was far more knowledgable than either of us about these things and global mythology in general, made this second argument, the argument you are making now, to JRR Tolkien. Tolkien replied, "Yes, this is the story God is telling us always, but the important difference here is that Jesus actually lived." And that's how Lewis became Christian, ultimately.
And, incidentally, that's my answer as well - Jesus lived. Bacchus, Osiris, Tammuz, Mithras, Krishna, Apollo, Hercules were always proper myths. This difference creates a very important distinction and brings us to the point where we have to decide if Jesus fitting this pattern is the sign of God in the field of time or if it is the sign of a madman who thought of himself as God. I've made my choice and you can make yours, but don't kid yourself into thinking this is the same as deciding Bacchus never really existed.

OK, so how many of these "gods" born to virgins who were crucified and and then raised from the dead have any documentary evidence other than legend to back them up? There is more documentary evidence of the birth, life, crucifixion, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ than their is of the voyages of Christopher Columbus to the new world (but one is taught as fact and the other is taught as fable), and even the Jewish Talmud states that Mary was a virgin when Jesus was conceived. Google "Christian Evidences" and you'll see the mountain of proof of God the Father Almighty and His Son Jesus Christ.

Did you know this is not the first time the claim has been made? Copy and paste time - and note these are the conclusions of NON Christian scholars:
Following his own critical examination of this theme, Louis Matthews Sweet wrote:
“After a careful, laborious, and occasionally wearisome study of the evidence offered and the analogies urged, I am convinced that heathenism knows nothing of virgin births. Supernatural births it has without number, but never from a virgin in the New Testament sense and never without physical generation, except in a few isolated instances of magical births on the part of women who had not the slightest claim to be called virgins. In all recorded instances which I have been able to examine, if the mother was a virgin before conception took place she could not make that claim afterward” (p. 188).
Even Thomas Boslooper, a modernist who repudiated the historical reality of a literal virgin birth of Christ, conceded:
“The literature of the world is prolific with narratives of unusual births, but it contains no precise analogy to the virgin birth in Matthew and Luke. Jesus’ ‘virgin birth’ is not ‘pagan’” (p. 136).

I will do the study as you suggest, BUT, you said it right, if they were, (although that is just mans recording, and the BIBLE was written by man, UNDER THE LEADING OF THE HOLY GHOST, so we know it's accurate) Other stuff is just something that man makes up, scientist, whatever you wanna call them, the only thing right, if it is so, were they were *gods* not THE GOD, The GREAT I AM! He was sent from GOD, who were these others (if they are even true, which I do not believe they are) were sent from the devil. Satan and his angels came down to earth, don't you think they may have mated with people? Read the WORD! There is only ONE God, who created heaven and earth, and everything in it, including you. Scientist will always try to baffle people and lead people astray, the Bible warns of these people, it says avoid foolish questions and genealogies, because they lead to further strife, (people trying to prove their point) but the only foolish ones is those who do believe that there is a GOD, and only one God! Sure, there were *gods* but there is only ONE GOD who is sovereign and Omnipotent!!!

Taking your point then you can substantiate their claims with the same degree of contemporary writings that are in existence with Christianity. If these were real events then you would have extensive supporting events such as a world wide movement to worship them and countless lives changed for the better because of their sacrifices just as you have with Christianity. Also you then would have future events proclaimed and verified through history as you have with Christianity. Anything less than that and all you have is poor attempts to deceive people away from believing in God's only Son who came to save the lost.
Hope that helps.

Don't forget about Mithras. Same story, different region and place in history. The story has been retold so many times to so many different people all over the world, we cannot possibly find out how/where it originated. Paul and his cronies were the last ones to retell their version of the story and convince people it was true. With enough luck and irony, people thousands of years in the future will know very little of Christianity but actually believe that Star Wars and Harry Potter really happened. lol

Yep, I've learned about some ancient world religions. It was also very common in the BC times for kings and rulers to claim they were Gods, which is why a lot of people were expecting the messiah to be a political leader.
Anyway, you can choose to worship who you want, and I can choose to worship who I want. I've got my reasons, and I know you can respect that.

Okay, I am a christian and I will attempt to answer this question. There are many things in history that are wonderfully parallel to christianity, many religions are simlar. The key to christianity is that we believe that Jesus was the son of the ONLY GOD...the fact that people in times before Christ worshiped "gods" does not justify me believing in the Gods of the past. Only one God created the world and the heavens, he sent his son to die on the cross for the worlds sins whether we believe in him or not. I do not judge other peoples right to believe or not believe, that is our sole purpose for living in this world. We are here to choose from right and wrong, to either believe the word of God no matter how long it takes us and to express our belief in Jesus as the son of God. That is my purpose. I try to be as loving and kind to others as I can, representing the spririt of God and trying to share with as many people as I can when I feel the need about Jesus and God. I personally would not be alive right now without the grace of God and hopefully one day you will see that his power is beyond anything you can imagine and can truely change your life.
Thanks for asking such an interesting question....Kimba

I think you should re-evaluate your information before claiming it to be fact. Dionysus is a part of Greek mythology and was born from Zeus's thigh. He did go to Hades, but he wasn't crucified or tortured. What exactly is your source?
