I was taught this in my bible class, but then I started thinking. How could a Jewish person be in a Christian setting as far worshiping God? I'm confused.

The Old Testament (the foundation of Judaism) is based on the arrival of the Messiah. Once this event occurs, the Old Testament is fulfilled, thus ushering in New Testament times.

Long before Jesus was born, every good Jew new that the Messiah was going to be Jewish because He was prophesied as coming from the House of David.

Jesus came to, among other things, establish a Church, a Christian a Church - a Church for those who believe Jesus was the Messiah; the Fulfillment of the Old Testament.

Jesus, being God, was born a Jew but that does not mean He, again - being God, is confined to Jewish Law. Jewish Law is/was for people to follow, not God.

This is how Jesus, even though He was born a Jew, is able to establish a Church that is outside of Judaism.

Jesus, God the Son, started a new church, the Christian Church.

Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church." (Matthew 16:17)

But The Catholic Church affirms the Jewish heritage of both Jesus and Christianity, "To the Jews belong the sonship, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs, and of their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ.'

With love in Christ.

Jesus didn't found the (Roman) Catholic church -- at least not in the historical sense. The RC came into being nearly a thousand years later. During the first century, however, the church moved out across the Roman Empire and beyond and became open to Gentiles. The Book of Acts gives the highlights. After that, you need to consult a good textbook on Church history.

Jewish religious leaders would not accept Jesus as the Messiah and kicked the Apostles out of the Temple. When the Apostles got kicked out of the Temple, they were forced to start a different church - the catholic church.

If the Jewish leaders had accepted Jesus as the Messiah, we would all probably be known as Christian Jews.

Among the Christian churches, only the Catholic Church has existed since the time of Jesus. Every other Christian church is an offshoot of the Catholic Church. The Eastern Orthodox churches broke away from unity with the pope in 1054. The Protestant churches were established during the Reformation, which began in 1517. (Most of today’s Protestant churches are actually offshoots of the original Protestant offshoots.) Only the Catholic Church existed in the tenth century, in the fifth century, and in the first century, faithfully teaching the doctrines given by Christ to the apostles, omitting nothing.

Jesus promised, "I will build my Church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it" (Matt. 16:18). This means that his Church will never be destroyed and will never fall away from him. His Church will survive until his return.

There is an unbroken line of popes going back to Peter, the first pope. Here is a list: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/12272b.htm

Jesus’ Church is called catholic ("universal" in Greek) because it is his gift to all people. He told his apostles to go throughout the world and make disciples of "all nations" (Matt. 28:19–20). For 2,000 years the Catholic Church has carried out this mission, preaching the good news that Christ died for all men and that he wants all of us to be members of his universal family (Gal. 3:28). Nowadays the Catholic Church is found in every country of the world and is still sending out missionaries to "make disciples of all nations" (Matt. 28:19). The Church Jesus established was known by its most common title, "the Catholic Church," at least as early as the year 107, when Ignatius of Antioch used that title to describe the one Church Jesus founded. The title apparently was old in Ignatius’s time, which means it went all the way back to the time of the apostles.
