Ok, first off I am an Atheist. I do not believe in God at all. I believe man made God out of fear, both of death and of being alone in the world. But thats how I feel and I have the right to feel that way if I'd like, just like you have the right to believe what you'd like.
Anyways this is not about me or that. My question is if it is weird for me to be happy for someone because before they died they found God? My friend was Nine-teen years and a few months ago he was driving home from his job on the express way when he ended up losing control of his vehicle and flying off the road upside down into a small river, where he slowly drowned as his car sank. Now since then my faith has only faded more, but as I think back I can't help but be happy for him, not because of death but because of the happiness he got before he died....

You see my friend was really heavy into drugs and two months before the accident he gave himself to God and quit all the drugs, quit drinking, quit hanging out with the wrong crowd and started raising his newborn daughter. Seeing him so happy pretty much made me quit all the crazy drugs I did as well, besides marijuana occasionally and drinking. But seeing him so happy was something that I didn't see that much of before, besides when he was really high. So even though I don't believe in God I'm happy that he found God, because it made him a happier person and made him change for the better and he got to experience some really happiness before he died.
Is that weird of me to feel since I don't believe in God?

Sorry your previous question got deleted.
Nope, that's not wierd at all. Even us atheists are human, and find joy in the things that make other people's lives better. :-D

I think that's pretty cool...
Not to be offensive or anything, but it makes me wonder if may be deep down inside you may have a want to have his kind of faith.
If not, then I still think it's really awesome you feel that way. But looking at his life as an example... quitting drugs, being a real father and his happiness... would that not prove to you what God can do in the lives of His children? Just a thought!
Thanks for sharing!!

I'm sorry you lost your friend. :(
No, it's not weird for anybody to be glad that a person found some means of comfort in their life, even if we believe that the comfort they found is a falsehood. If the thought of God and Heaven comforted your friend as he was dying, then I'm glad, too.
One of my little brothers-in-law just started going to a Jesus camp and a very evangelical church. The rest of his family is basically not religious, because they're too focused on being addicted to meth to give a crap about answering his questions about the world, so he turned to his friends in school, who led him to Christianity. For this good of his own brain, I'd much rather he had an atheistic worldview than a mythological one (Christianity) but as long as this gives him some reason to make more of his life than being another meth head, I'm thrilled. I'd rather he be a Christian, even an evangelical one, than a drug addict. Even though I don't agree with religion, and neither does my husband (his eldest brother, whom he looks up to a lot) we're both encouraging him to accept the support of the Christian community just so that he has somebody to turn to besides his messed-up family. We figure he has plenty of time to learn the truth about the universe after he becomes an adult and can get the hell away from his crappy family.
So I understand your feelings completely. It's normal to want our loved ones to find comfort and happiness, even if we know that what they're comforted by is an illogical lie.

Its not weird at all, it happens everyday, there are people all over the world who find God everyday. Somewhere right now Jesus is sending his Holy Spirit into somebody's heart and taking away all that fear and doubt that had built up inside them, the Bible is the best selling book of all time for a reason, its words have power, your friend probably had someone praying for him. I know I had someone praying for me and thats what got me saved and Born Again, its a tremendous change in your heart when Jesus moves in. Its a blessing I am so glad I have, today I can't see how I made it without Jesus in my life guiding me and helping to live one day at a time. You can have that same feeling, You can have Jesus living your heart, do you ever feel the Holy Spirit tugging at you, do you ever feel that you need to make a decision about God, if so don't put it off, life is short, the Bible says you must be Born again to see the kingdom of God, your friend is there, you can be to, and have that peace, just pray Dear Jesus, I know and confess that I am sinner in need of salvation. I believe you died on a cross at calvery and arose from the grave to wash away my sins, I ask you right now to come into my heart and save me, I pray this Prayer believing in the name of Jesus Amen. If you prayed this prayer with a sincere heart you are now a child of God, rejoice that your name is written in the Lambs book of Life. Jesus will now send his Holy Spirit to come and live in your heart and guide you into all truth. If you made a decision for Christ or have any questions, Please send me an email, God Bless YOU!!

You may not participate in a religion, but I believe it is on your heart that God is real. Your friend passed into Heaven to be with God and await the return of the the Son of Man, Jesus Christ, and you find solace in that. I soundly respect your Atheist views, and do not question them in the least, but I do believe you have at least a little Christian in there somewhere. It may not be enough to ever get your butt in a church, but remember, you don't have to sit in a pew to have your own relationship with God. If that had been you, would your friends have the same solace that you came to a relationship with God and therefore they could look forward to spending Eternity with you when our Savior, Jesus Christ, comes to rescue us from sin and reunite us with our departed loved ones in the Eternal Peace of Heaven? Keep your heart open, and you might just be surprised some day.

I am Christian now, but I was once Atheist. Allow me to explain. I never used to believe in God, but I still felt happy for others who did because I thought, 'Well, if there is a God, at least they have come to find Him.'

I think somewhere deep down you believe in God. It's not weird that you're happy for your friend because he was at peace finally in his life and that makes you happy. Is there so much wrong with believing and giving your life to God? Your friend quit drugs, right? I'd rather believe in something than believe in nothing.

I am happy that he found God... and the fact that you are happy for him suggests to me...that in some small way you too still believe even though you say not.
But no matter what, I hope that you are blessed for knowing your friend.

Not at all. You saw him become someone who learned to live his life well and if I remember from your deleted question, he had become closer with his child and was being a good father. I think it makes sense that you would be happy that he found that love before dying.
I'm sorry you lost your friend though.

I don't think it's weird at all that you're happy for your friend. It seems to me that you're happy for him because he was able to turn his life around. Finding God was the vehicle he used for that, but what's important is that he experienced happiness.
You don't need to believe in God to be happy for someone when they make progress in their lives, even if belief in God is the reason for that progress.
