I currently have a Bose AM15 setup for movies and I have a Velodyne CT-100 to take care of the extra low end. I'm no audiophile but the Bose sounds "lacking" for stereo music. 5.1 movies sound OK though.

As far as dedicated stereo speakers, I'm only really familiar with the really good reviews on the Bose 301's. Do you recommend another brand and/or model?

I'm looking to spend about $500 a pair max.

Stick with the Bose. I have the 301s for my stereo and they are great.

I'm not a huge fan of Bose because of their deceptive marketing, lack of technical information and lawsuits against anyone who tries to publish performance specs.

If you could go a bit more, A company called "Magnapan" sells some MMG speakers for $550/pair. These are electrostatic panel speakers rather than traditional cone speakers.

While a bit exotic - the HUGE surface area of these speakers give great detail and accuracy which is what audiophiles crave.

They have no low-end so a subwoofer is a must-have with these. But my audiophile friends have all switched to some type of panel speakers because of the amazing detail.

Magnapan also has a 45 day in-home trial and you can find them used on eBay and sometimes on Craigslist.

Check out the wharfedale diamond 9.1.($319.-$350.) They blow Bose out of the water. Check out reviews at stereophile.com. You can get alot more bang for your buck compared to what you will get from Bose. Good luck!
