If I start towing small to mid sized cars with my 1997 Mercury Tracer (New Transmission) Will it ruin the transmission, or will it be ok?

will it hurt horribly if I tow one car (about 50 miles) and then never do it again?

There are all kinds of problems this will create. The car was not designed for towing. There is not a transmision cooler built into these cars and you will overheat your transmission and ultimatly have to relace the whole thing... which whil cost almost the Blue Book Value of the Tracer.

That will put a lot of stress on the componets. The car was not meant for that. If you want to do some towing, then trade it in and get a truck.

For one thing, the Tracer's brakes may not be able to handle the extra weight. That could present a bigger problem than ruining the transmission.

If your tracer has an automatic trans, don't unless you keep at or below 10 mph.

I towed a VW rabit behind my 86 Escort GT from LA to Seattle with no ill effects except it scrubed about half the tread of my rear tires. The rabit liked to push and pull the rear of the escort around going through the moutains. My GT had 30k on it at the time and still have it with close to 300k now. Nothing failed before it's time. The 5-speed manual will take it, but the auto will suffer damage.

Just be warned the brakes will be marginal.

You really should not be towing anything with a Mercury Tracer.
