Absolutely NO. It is a waste of money right now with few titles available in either format and fewer still to rent. And let's not forget you could end up with obsolete machinery and media when the war is finally over.
If you have an HD tv and want to take advantage of it right now, I suggest you get yourself a quality up-converter which will allow you to watch DVDs you already own plus rent anything you want with a difference in quality of the image that most people can't even see.

I have this machine and tested it as is from the box. It is extremely good. Mine has now been modified (about a $1000 worth) and you can't see the difference from HD/Bluray unless, like me, it is your job.
For its price, it is a much better buy than an HD/Bluray machine right now. And another thing, although more important to me than to most people, I can watch DVDs from Europe. A lot of European movies don't ever come out here and the only way to see them is to get them directly from Europe but you need a region free/multi format player like this one.
Whatever you end up buying, have fun.

With an hd or blueray participant you have the skill to take income of the applications that the lcdtv grew to become into designed for. You get two times as many strains of determination in the severe definition format and you will see a pointy crystal clean image. make specific to apply the final inputs in the television for top definition or you will no longer get those effects. I say choose for it! each and every thing is going severe def, merely make specific to get a participant which could do the two formats.

Both
I have the 1080P TV so I'm going to use it.
At the price they are at for the holidays. I will buy one of each.
The war over the formats is still to strong to pick just one. I don't think in a year or two I'll look back and think I should have waited. I will be able to watch the movie I want in HD once it come out.

I have both players. The prices for the hardware are low enough.
But what I am not doing is re-buying the movies I already have on standard DVD. I will buy the new Pirates movie on BluRay and the latest Harry Potter on HD-DVD for my family, but I am taking a wait-and-see before upgrading my software.

Buying either right now is a waste of money.
Why should I have to choose which movies I do and don't want to watch? All HD players on the market can only play one of the HD formats. Either one of those formats has to go away entirely, OR they have to provide me with a single player that can handle both formats. Until then, let the stupid companies and studios languish. They should better than to foist a format war onto consumers.
And, no, buying 2 separate players is not what I consider a viable solution. My TV only has 2 HDMI inputs - and one's being used by the satellite dish. In order to hook up another 2 devices, I'm going to have to get one of those HDMI switches (or a high-end receiver) which just means spending more money when there's no good reason.

It really depends on what you're into, Blu-Ray is more expensive than HD-DVD currently, and as far as movies go both formats pretty much offer the same high definition picture 1080p at 1920 X 1080 pixels in 16:9 Aspect ration with 7.1 surround sound audio channels. However I have both, and I think Blu-Ray has more titles, and It's safe to say it has a better future.
