Nothing is ever necessary. It simply depends on the person and/or the situation. Thankfulness could certainly be an internal thought, not required to be outwardly expressed.

By not voicing it to others perhaps would be an example of it "standing alone" but it is necessary to be thankful at least within ourselves so we don't fall victim to getting absorbed into dwelling on things we lack and subsequently can become bitter people or conceited

I'm thankful to be alive and for the opportunities I've had in my life. I think a person has to include other people and things to be truely thankful, so therefore, it cannot stand alone!

You know how this is thrown in to our faces at least once a day, and why. I've thought about it. I usually just say that I am glad about what is good in my life. It is is rather silly to be thankful to an unthinking universe. Kind of show us how the whole god thing got started.

Thankfulness can't stand alone. If you feel thankful, you are appreciative of something or someone. Just being happy with your life and loving of others suffices, I think.
