I think the drill instructors got in trouble for doing stuff that all drill instructors do, and I also think that some of the witnesses are exaggerating their stories a bit. If what the drill instructors did is a crime, then all drill instructors should be court marshaled. I know when I went through boot camp I had my toiletries stomped on, I was smacked a couple of times, and I had to down water just like they said, but I never felt like I was getting treated any worse than the next guy. It seems to me like recruits are getting softer and softer these days. Don't think that I'm backing a drill instructor who did indeed break the law, but a drill instructor who is only trying to get his recruits to train the right way shouldn't be ratted out like that.

I was a Driil Sergeant......First rule you do not put your hands on a trainee except to prevent injury / accidents / or make proper corrections.....you NEVER slap kick or punch.....If you rDI did it he was WRONG.....destruction of personal property is prohibitted.....you can confiscate it but it must be returned.

Drill Instructors have always been tough on recruits. Unfortunately many of the present generation who look to the service for benefits have neither the fortitude or toughness that a soldier requires. They have been pampered, have no discipline( which one can blame on the parents or the lack of parents), and complain when the going gets tough. Some tactics used by Drill Instructors should be criticized. But the recruit must understand that his training and disciplined response is not only for his benefit but for the benefit of all the others in his unit. If one does what he is told to do there is no problem and usually there is no punishment.

Coming from someone who took martial arts from a teacher who wasn't afraid to throw a student into the wall for big mistakes, it's probably odd that I'm siding with the discharge on this one.

Actually, my reasons aren't the ones given anyway... mine have to do with forcing recruits to drink water until vomiting. For those who don't know, that can cause water poisoning, which is a sometimes fatal condition. It's all well and good to support a little bit of rough edges in training, but the point where an instructor is endangering lives is the point where he SHOULD be sacked

This is the reason why we are loosing so many soldiers in Iraq. A drill sergeants job is to make soldiers out of civilians, so they will be ready for the turmoils of war. But with the new style of training the new recruits can't be prepared. Drill instructors must treat recruits as if they are 5 years old in a Sunday school class.
We are getting weaker as our enemies are getting stronger.
