I guess you've the right to say I'm Italian even if you don't speak the language but I think that's just depending on you how much Italian are you feeling by yourself without speaking your anchestors' language. If I were you (but probably I'm influenced by both the facts that I'm Italian and I've always been eager with learning other languages) I would study at least the basic of this wonderful idiom; this could facilitate your approach to our enormous culture and contribute to let you feel proud with yr origins. Learning Italian it's not mandatory but at least advisable, mostly for yr own pleasure.

Much of your heritage is dependent on the culture AND language. I speak very little Italian, but I know a few words, so I feel Italian. I make it a point to learn a little bit of every language from my countries.

Vladimir is *so* Italian !!! Hey, there !!!

In the US at least, I don't think there is any social pressure to be able to speak the language before you have the right to say you are Italian. Is just means that your parentage is Italian. However, why not learn it? It can only add to your mystique.

no, whether you speak the language or not that doesn't change where your family came from. Language is only one part of a culture. If your family came from Italy your Italian no questions asked, doesn't matter that you can't speak the language

You don't have to learn a language to proove your culture - I'm part Portugese but I don't know one word of it. If you want to learn Italian then go for it, but not just because you feel you have to.
