Unless he likes to dart out the door every time it's opened just take his collar off him. They're a potential choking hazard indoors anyway.

Have you tried a smaller collar and tag? Also, there are sprays you can get that stop them from chewing (tastes bad). Ask the pet store.

When you see him chew on his ID tag, Say NO in a firm way, and hold him on the collar firmly..

This is a good way of training..

Works for me....

You can order a flat tag for very very cheap of Ebay (slider tag) that slides over the dog's collar and is still highly visible.

It's the rectangular one with the slots on the sides. I have one on my dog and it's great.

I have 2 rat terriers. Mine chew theirs, only when they are bored. Make sure he has toys, interact with him, and make sure he is excercised ALOT. Rat terriers are super hyper and get bored easily. They will also dig when bored, my female dug through my carpet several times.

Get them laminated in that silicon rubber...
That's what I did with my chihuahua. When he understood that the tags were no deal, he went for the house shoes!
