There are different methods depending on the physical attributes of the other materials compared to sand...

If the other materials are larger than the granules sand, you can pass everything through screen filters.

If things are iron based, you can use a magnet to separate them.

If they're lighter than water, pour the sand into water and skim the material off the top. (Ex. Styrofoam beads from inside a beanbag chair)

If they're lighter than sand, but don't float, you can use fans to separate the lighter particles from falling sand.

These are just a few examples. It will also depend on the volume of sand you're looking to separate.
