My skin hasn't alway been great, but I've never had bad acne. All of a sudden over the last few months I've been getting large cyst-like pimples on my cheeks and near my nose. They hurt and they are ugly and leave a purplish scar. What can I do? Health ins. won't go into effect until Jan so not going to the dermatologist right now but need to do something now! I can't deal with my skin looking like this for all the holiday gatherings. I have been super stressed, more stressed than a person should be, could that be causing this and what can I do? Any help??? Oh, I'm 26 so it's not a teenage/hormonal thing.

Like you, I never had proper acne as a teenager but started getting it when I was 29. At 32 I had an ovary removed because of a cyst and the acne cleared up. I got another bout of it years later at menopause so I think it must be hormone-driven. Stress would help to make you spotty too, but your problem sounds like mine. Spots were big and very painful, more like boils than ordinary pimples with a core. They were under the skin rather than raised and contained just watery pus and blood. They left a deep hole which took ages to heal up and scarred. I think your doctor could give you a wide-spectrum antibiotic for acne to look after you for the time being. When your insurance kicks in, go to a specialist and get it sorted out.

Dry and/or greasy skin due to poor oil composition of the skin. Thick greasy oils clog pores, lack of oil leads to dryness and irritation. You need thin oils to moisturize while dissolving and clearing gunk in your poors. Try fish oil or seafood. 2 tsp fish oil a day or 4 servings of seafood a week. Stick it out for at least 2 months; it will take a long time to replace all your oil. Any effect after 1-2 days is temporary or random; so even if it makes you break out a little at first, you haven't given it a full try yet.

In the short term you can wash and moisturize well, but that will only go so far. Plus excessive washing can be drying and excessive moisturizing can be clogging. Use a small amount of a light moisturizer, made with oil not jelly or grease. Often that means soybean oil or mineral oil. Mineral oil means mined from the ground. So soybean oil is usually better, though mineral oil won't cause too much harm. Clean with soap and water, not a harsh acne cleanser. Even then they only work so well. So you really need the seafood.

Antibiotics aren't really good for bacteria long term, they'll come back in force after. Short term they may help. After you get off them find some kefir with acidophilus listed first or 2nd to replace the friendly bacteria they destroyed. Studies show less illness when you have these bacteria, even outside the stomach in places such as the lungs and elsewhere. You want friendly bacteria to fill the void when the antibiotics stop, not harmful ones.

In the short term you might also try 100,000+ iu retinol vitamin A (a megadose, and too much for normal use) or one of the acne drugs that is similar to retinol vitamin A. It's some minor harm to your organs, but it helps against bacteria on your skin. At least it doesn't have the other long term drawbacks to your skin that antibiotics and many scrubs do.

If you would like to learn how to treat your acne permanently and regain your health and wellbeing, without drugs, without typical acne treatments, and without any side effects, then this will be the most important letter you will ever read.

As a nurse, I can tell you that stress can cause the problems you're having with your skin. Hormone imbalances can also be the culprit. But you're not alone. No-one's really immune to stress and hormonal factors. I've been using some of the products available at www.romancing-the-soap.com
I was really cautious at first (I do not usually buy on-line). But I've become a faithful reader of the website, not because it's authored by a doctor, but because it contains accurate and useful information. Anyway, the products are absolutely wonderful. For my troubled skin I found the Complexion Clarifier can't be beat (not cheap, but it blows all the other products I used in the past out of the water!). This doc keeps the freshest and most potent products on hand, another main reason why I purchase mine from this site only. There are many pages dedicated to stress, skin health, etc. Take a look and I'm sure you'll agree the information is useful and the site is consumer-oriented - no "bull" there. I forget where the complexion clarifier is listed, it may be under the section "Healthy Skin". You can also contact the site owner for professional, free advice. Good luck!

Been there, done that, have the t-shirt. Same thing happened to me. They are horrible. Went to the dermatologist twice. They are caused from stress or your parents. Mine are from stress. Medication didn't work. The only option, if meds don't work is accutane, which is a major dose of vitamin A for five months. It is a government controlled medication that requires you to get two forms of birth control because it will result in deformed fetuses if you get pregnant while on it. They monitor your white blood cells and make sure you don't get liver damage every month for five months. The doctor said it does work. I looked on yahoo answerer's to see if it can come back after the five months and yes it can. So I didn't do it. I have acne scars now, and my face seems o.k. for now. I just tried to stop stressing so much. Good luck. They spread and can get infected by the way.

I had peaches and cream skin until I was about 25. Then hormonal changes and INCREDIBLE stress happened. My face reacted.

Do you use a toner in your skin care regiment? A lot of our skin care issues can be resolved or helped by balancing the pH in our skin mantle. We need the pH to be balanced so that our skin can look and feel good but also so that we can fight the bacteria that is in our daily environment.

I'm a beauty consultant with a botanically based health and wellness company called Arbonne. I would be more than happy to provide you with a free skin care sample for you to try out. Email me for more information.

Best of luck.

well you could use proactive. I heard that works well. Also, you should stop worrying and relax. Stress can cause acne so durring the holidays, sit back, relax, and enjoy some turkey!

even at your age, hormones can surge. have you changed any of your eating, drinking, sleeping patterns? look for any possible changes that could be triggering this. in the mean time, try the line that i use. its called 'zia natural'. i get it at a health food market but its sold on the net at zianatural.com. ive found the cheapest prices for it on ebay. it is very natural, soothing and has no harsh fragrances in it. use the liquid soap, the aloe/rosewater toner, and then the moisturizer and spf30 sunblock. good luck
