Even though your kitten needs twice the nutrients of an adult cat, at this tender age, his tummy cannot hold the quantity you would feed an adult. At six weeks of age, he should receive at least four small feedings a day, then around twelve weeks three times a day until six months. After that he can be fed twice daily.
The first few weeks in a kitten's life are the most important ones in terms of socializing and bonding with a human, and should be treated as a very precious time in your relationship. This is the time for cuddling and holding, playing gently, and talking to your kitten. Properly handled, he will associate these happy times with you, dear human, and be a friend to you for life.
Kittens in their early weeks will play with almost anything. You may be tempted to buy a bunch of toys, but remember, their attention spans are much like those of children, and they might be just as happy playing with a crumpled up ball of paper as with a motorized mouse.

One important caution at this age: don't let your kitten start to associate your hands with a play toy. Doing so can develop into bad habits of scratching and biting fingers. Hands are for holding, stroking and gentle hugs; toys are for rough play.

First - get a litter box and cat litter, and show the kitten where it is. If she has an accident in the house, pick up the droppings and put it in the litter box. She will quickly learn what the box is for. Praise her and reward her when she does use it.

Second, get some kitten food - get a high quality brand like Iams or Eukanuba or Purina One - don't get the dept. store brands. Stick to one or two flavors from the same brand, or you tend to upset the cat's stomach.

Third - make an appointment with a local vet to have the kitten examined, and to get neutered at some point. Not neutering a housepet is irresponsible - there are literally hundreds of thousands of animals that are euthanized each year because there are no homes for them. Ask friends and neighbors for recommendations about a vet.

Fourth - consider getting 2 kittens. Cats can be social animals, and having another kitten in the house will help keep them entertained and busy and happy. A lonely cat can be a destructive cat. The cost of a 2nd cat isn't that much more than for one. If you do get a 2nd one, get 2 food bowls, and 2 litter boxes.

How old a kitten is it? You should take it to your vet to have its shots and a general once over. The vet can also give you basic care instructions depending on how old a kitten it is (i.e. if it's a VERY young kitten that hasn't been weaned, it would be different than caring for an older kitten). There are plenty of books at pet stores as well, but the quickest thing would be to check out Petsmarts website (or another pet store's website)

Depending on where your getting the kittens from and how old it is you should get some basic advice from the people your getting it from!

without knowing what food and upbringing the kitten has had it's difficult to give specific advice, check it has had it's jabs and is healthy, a trip to the vets for a once over wouldn't hurt, but if the kitten has already been wormed do not let the vets worm it again as this could be dangerous.

check out the RSPCA and Cats Protection websites for help and advice

Go to the shelter or an adoption fair and talk to the people there -- they are VERY experienced.

Also make sure you supervise the interaction between your daughter and the kitten -- you can do this by simply playing with the kitten, showing your daughter the proper way to play with a kitten and how to just simply stop playing with the kitten if it gets too rough (no scolding and no hitting the kitten), and showing her how to scoop the litterbox.

When I was 14, I rescued a kitten - i kew NOTHING about caring for kittens. My best school chum Sonia helped me IMMENSELY by giving me detailed information on how to care for Pee Wee.
