People believe in psychic phenomena and a lot of religious/spiritual stuff because they are afraid of dying and if you convince yourself that there are forces beyond the physical realm you feel like you are immortal. To accept reality is to face fear and so religion is weakness. Agree or disagree?

I have heard PhDs say some stupid things in my life. I dont have nearly so much respect for education as Deslock.

I think it's already been proven that people are plain stupid.

I can make a comment about religious/spiritual stuff and psychic phenomenon; as I think that I have experienced these things. You say that spiritual events occur because we are afraid of dying. I was involved in a head-on on the highway with a drunk driver - I got crushed pretty good. I had one of those out of body experiences, but only after I was not afraid of dying. I thought I was going to die and accepted it and prepared myself for the moment -- that is when the psychic happened, after the fear evaporated. Also, I have never felt immortal. Never. A totally bizarre thing to feel for me on this Earth. The hardest reality to accept has been the realization that our belief systems, most notably, the belief in the omnipotence of science, has been discordant with reality, I had been fooling myself into believing in the power of science as the source to the truth. The more and more I studied science the more I realized that something was way way off base. It didn't make any sense, the laws didn't interconnect, they should interconnect. My recent studies of Kant highlighted some serious misconceptions that have trapped the human mind and will from which we have not escaped. Most notably his ideas about space-time and his omission of the representations of mass. Science was full of obvious errors in thought and application that, perhaps through fear, have prevented us from getting beyond the indoctrination of youth into the belief that we can extract the essences of life without the need for the divine. Nothing can be further from the truth. And to stand up to science, and embrace the spiritual, hopefully the two will be combined, is not a sign of weakness. I'd much rather sit at home, play guitar and paint, but I do understand the Logos and how it connects the laws of physics. Sigh. It isn't a sign of weakness. I'd much rather do something else.

That depends on how much your brain has been brainwashed into believing there is life there after.

I will use the example of the suicide bombers who are told that they will become martyrs in the life there after. I say to myself this could not be possible as there will be nothing left of the human body to go to heaven. I am sure that the massive explosion would disintegrate any spirit and soul beyond redemption as the atom structure of the human body is destroyed for ever and the Gama electrons are burnt.

In conclusion then I agree total with you as it becomes mind of matter.

I must add that the rationale put forward by Deslok of Gammolon was not his own answerer but a cut and past job of a well known PhD. Further more the hole paper on the subject didn't say yes or no to your Question at all.

The question for creation cannot be resolved until the source of another solar system comes forward with their intelligent minds to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Gods do exist.

The universe is profoundly indifferent to individual beliefs and desires and philosophies. Why you would imagine it otherwise? Life is far too brief, existence is meaningless and the universe has no purpose. This universe is a pretty grim place, but that does not mean it has to be dull and boring. Each of us is here for a comparative instant then we are gone. The universe doesn’t notice us when we are here and it certainly does not miss us when we are gone. We’re nothing but unified arrangements of atoms and particles, drifting around enjoying consciousness every now and then for a second or so before splitting up to become bits and pieces of trees and stars and french fries. Those companion particles continue drifting though the cosmos, enjoying a kind of fragmented immortality. When you clump together more or less accidentally it might be a part of a rock or another person.. or a french fry.

I disagree and Blue (the cat) says you forgot things such as hope and faith. Without positive there is no negative and so there is nothing. What kind of weakness is in this question? Life is death ect.... But without purpose why live??? People believe in a lot of things other than those mentioned in your hypothesis. So I will disagree.... without further information it is to hard to agree with it.. I love that you kept it short though.

Considering there is much about the universe that we do not yet understand, it is entirely possible that such phenomenon exist in some form. Our understanding of these things is just being explored and just like scientific discovery, new information comes to light on a continuing basis.

With that said, I disagree with the last sentence in your question because I think that Religion is simply an attemtpt to understand the universe in a manner contrary to science. I don't consider it a retreat from reality.

Disagree.
God is real - He created all things - including you and I - and has given us the keys to life.
It is not a crutch, but a true reality.
I do not "feel immortal" ( you have been watching too much tv) but know that God is eternal and that I am part of his family, in this life and the one to come.
Turning things a bit - people will also brings theories like the one above to make themselves feel better when there hearts are opposed to faith.

Spirituality is born from a personal occurrence with a divine, psychic or mystical experience of one form or another which inevitably connects a person to All that Is/God/Goddess/Allah/Great Spirit /whatever you want to call it.

Religion is second hand opinion of someone else’s divine experience. I think you will find that religions, and especially fanatical religions, tend to separate and divide people, while spirituality brings people together.

Thank God that Spirituality in all its seemingly paranormal forms is on the increase! http://www.psychic-junkie.com

The existence of God can be proved by the proof of first cause, that is that every natural perception requires a change and thus a former perception. So no, fear is not the only reason.
