This is what happens when you let clerics run the laws and justify punishments from a religious docterine. Where is the "judgement" in this case? To pass judgement on any case, religion should never be put into play. The action, the witnesses, the physical evidence should be the deciding factor, but even here in the US many people play the religion card based on crimes and punishment.
Just last year, a man that was Muslim tried doing the same thing with our "rights to religious freedom" law in the constitution. He had beaten his wife in the middle of the street because he caught her walking their child in a stroller by herself without his permission. Neighbors tried to stop him and the police came and arrested him. He was in jail for 30 days and was released on his own recogniscience till his court date. When he went to court he stated that because the laws state that he has the right to practice his religion as how he sees fit under the Constitution that he was in the right by beating his wife with a cane in the street publicly to show that he is a rightous man and does not tolerate his wife to undermine him due to the laws of his religious beliefs. He is a Sunni muslim. The judge decided to speak to the wife alone. It was said that her parents married her off at age 12 in the United States and she had her first child at 14. She recieved weekly beatings by their religious laws because it is written in their book to sustain a good marriage and to reaffirm that she is a good wife to her husband and to Allah.
He was so shocked that he came to a decision. The husband was to spend 20 yrs in prison for abusing a child under 17 by state law, repeated sexual assault of a minor, spousal abuse, and failure to abide by the laws of the state by marrying a child under the age of 16. The parents of the woman were outraged and defended the son in law! The wife and children were taken into protective custody and were given new identities to protect them from their family. The wife even defended her husband and cried and screamed that they were taking him away. The judge told them that if she would rather stay with the man then her children will be taken away from her and him and put into protective custody by the state. She got quiet real quick. Her own parents in the court room told her that it was her fault that this happened and that they have disowned her and even called her a whore. So, in my opinion, it was a sick version of a religion that is normally a very peacful practice. These are people that use religion to govern a country. Many muslims in this country do not see it like that and are not that extreme. It is sad that many cultures all around the world use religion as a justified basis for torture, control, and making laws. Thank goodness not all of them are that way though.

well i read it and the woman was being punished for being with a unrelated male........not for being raped! before the rapist kidnaped the man and woman they were together with out a family member present it is a sin in thier country.....and allowed to be punished! i am so sick of people who asume that the 3 faiths you mentioned are totaly sexist! in all 3 women are recognised as powerfull and bewitching because we can cause men to forget God and follow us mindlessly. that has been showed time and time again where a woman swayed the opinion of a man in her desired direction wether good or bad. women now a days feel that if they respect a man in any way or if a wife lets her husband run his home with his balls in tact with out a fight they are less of a woman. maybe men would respect us more if we were not trying to be like them!

Muslims aren't sexist. They've gone beyond that to declare war on women. If you don't believe that, check out the gender ratio in Muslim countries. There are less women than men. Forget having four wives. They'll be lucky to get even one.

well, instead of blaming the sexist judges, you have blamed all of Islam. That's like calling - "Christianity condones molesting boys". GROW UP and stop spreading hatred.
Under Sharia law - if not mistaken, the punishment for rape is death.
