Yes, I do believe to an extent that statement is true. Religion is something people look forward to, they live their lives in a certain way that their religion tells them to all in promise of a commendable afterlife. People who are not religious (like me) do not feel they need to live up to any [religious] standards, I mainly live up to my own code of ethics as well as society's, but then again, I do not fear death (I just don't want to go painfully). I do love to study all religions, but I myself am not a religious person, nor could ever be, and that is my choice. I wouldn't doubt that religious people are happier than those who do not believe, mainly because they have a goal. Just as kids like to behave and think about their actions before doing them is because they believe Santa Claus is watching and they want presents in return. People of religion do the same thing, except, the present being the afterlife. I am a very scientific person, I absolutely love concepts such as evolution and the Big Bang theory; in order for me to die happy would merely mean knowing the meaning of life.

I do have strong feelings about this subject, but it is difficult to put such feelings in words =/

If you could demonstrate that people hold religious convictions merely out of fear. Without that demonstration, then your understanding of religion as rooted in fear is merely a subjective impression or a generalization.
