Dogs can sleep outside in a kennel, when dogs are inside they are usually too warm and will like to lie down on a cold tiled floor or similar, they are not the same as humans.
Try to raise the kennel off the floor using timbers or bricks, face it away from the prevailling weather, line it with old carpet/blankets and we hung an old army blanket in the door with a slit up the middle to keep weather out. I also extended the apex roof on it out over the entrance by about a foot or so and that worked really well. Don't bother with a heater it's not needed. Good luck. (We live in the U.K)

If you have any pieces of carpet that you could fasten to the walls and floor inside the kennel, this would help make it feel warmer. You might also make sure that there is a flap of some kind covering the entrance that will stop the wind from getting in, but which your dog can easily get through. I wouldn't recommend putting anything electrical inside the kennel. It would only take a small amount of water getting on the wiring and your dog could be electrocuted. Pad the walls and floor, make a windproof flap for the door, and put in plenty of clean dry bedding.

Maia here (on the left) and her sister, Io, have a wooden kennel. It is double lined and insulated. The entrance is covered by a set of clear plastic strips to keep draughts out.
The run is protected on three sides by six foot high fence panels and it has a roof. In the kennel is a sofa, with a huge duvet. Behind a wire screen is a slim panel heater (200 watt), all the cables and heater are out of the dogs' reach. There's a radio, tuned to Radio 4 and a daylight sensor energy saving light. Their water is supplied through a water pipe with a valve like a cattle trough. A couple of sterilized bones and various other toys keep them amused.
They also have a small Van Gogh (Sunflowers - it's a postcard!)
They seem to do well. They really enjoy Test Match Special!

As many have said to you on here a third of a bale of straw well shook out in the kennel will keep your dog warm, dry and smelling fresh.A heavy piece of tarpaulin hung over the door stops a fair amount of wind getting into the kennel especially if the doorway faces away from the prevailing wind IE a few feet away from a wall or garage.Place the kennel at least 4-6 inches off the ground place a raised shelf inside the kennel for the dog to sleep on out of the way of draught. If the kennel is water proof there will be no problem what so ever.Far too many people are quick to judge others,my own dog stays in the house but if circumstances dictated that he sleep outside then he would. There are a lot of people who keep their dogs inside the house and think that they know best HOW KIND THEY ARE the dog jumping up and down stairs, slipping on polished floors, static from some types of carpets, chemicals air fresheners etc.that bring dogs out in allergies and the best of all CENTRAL HEATING that disturbs a dogs natural cycle of moulting his coat therefore it moults all year round. So do not let anyone BULLY you into doing things the way they think it should be done.A quick phone call to your local vet will put your mind at rest and because someone cleans up after dogs in an animal shelter does not make them experts.People like yourself could just as easy have a perfectly good dog put to sleep listening to the mop weilding expert.Good luck damp is your worry not cold.

Hi,
We have four dog who sleep in kennels outside. A good thing is to put a shelf in the middle of the wooden dog kennel.
So that when it's windy they can crawl behind it and stay warm. So you have the entrance of the kennel en you place a shelf from bottom to top next to the entrance. But only halfway deep, so the dog can get behind it. What 's good also are wood shaving. But it behind the shelf, on the floor you can make a little border so it's stays on the side were they can shelter. If you those shavings use those for animals, otherwise there is to much dust in it. It keep them warm and they keep smelling good too!
I hope you understand what I try to explain! My dogs love it!
Hopefully it helps.

there are heaters available, and I would try some of the kennel manufacturers online. Or you could rig up an infra red heater that you can hang from the ceiling, they are the ones farmers use for lambs/pigs etc.

Alternatively in the meantime could you buy one of the microwave dog warmers. If you dont get some heating in there, the dogs water will possibly freeze in the winter.

I personally think it is cruel to leave a six month old puppy outside, why bother having a dog to shut it outside?

How big is the kennel, is it one of those with an opening cut out, or is there a door you can shut so the dog isnt in a draught/wind.

Put the kennel inside if you can... Like in a garage. That would be a bit warmer. If it gets below 35 degrees at the least you have to bring the dog inside at the risk of freezing to death. But if none of these are possibly just put many blankets and such to keep the dog warm. I am not sure if a heating pad would work... it may get to hot and the dog may chew it. Good Luck!

we have a kennel in the back garden as we take in unwanted dogs we use a heat lamp and they are great you can leave them on all nigth use sawdust for the floor as well as this keep the heat in as well put down some old blankets so the dog can sleep on and toys for him/her to play with make sure there is no hole in the shed/kennels as this will let alot of the heat out if there is fill them or cover them up hope this help you can email me back for more detail if you like

Hi There, im not aware of any heaters - especially ones that are "puppy proof" & especially ones that are "lab proof" :)
I started using blankets but these really arent that practical - they get muddy & you'll constantly be washing them, they smell, they dont dry quickly when they get damp, and the puppy is a dog, not a child! you can use hay or the best i find works is shredded paper (you can get some from offices where they shred & still recycle after - therefore very cost effective & environmentally friendly) i change ours at least once a week & he loves it in his kennel. It will keep him warm - think of what homeless people do on the street - they sleep on newspapers & cardboard boxes - it is good insulation! & it drys quickly. You will find your pups fur will naturally thicken with being outside too. We bring ours inside at night, but during the day he is in the garden & has his kennel

Hope this helps

I look after a dog that has a small slimline heater in the top of her kennel.
The owners leave it on all the time as she is getting old.

I don't know where they got it but I do know they have never been in a pet shop in their lifes.

Try this pet store where I live they sell everything. www.championpetsupplies.co.uk

You can buy heated blankets for dogs too. They plug into the mains. Have a look at them.
