Peter just means rock, not 'little rock'. "Rock" suggests strength and permanence, qualities that Peter didn't display during his discipleship; he was impulsive and weak.
When Jesus renamed him Peter he was saying that Peter would become a strong foundation member of the church.
The Bible also says that the church is built on a foundation of apostles and prophets, and that Christ is the cornerstone(Eph 2:20), so calling Peter the foundation isn't saying that Jesus wasn't, just that Peter was part of it, and was the leader of the church in Jerusalem.
Tradition and early writings suggest strongly that Peter was in Rome at the end of his life, that he was instrumental - along with Paul - in starting and building up the church there, and that he was put to death there by Nero. He is considered by the Catholic Church to be the first Bishop of Rome, which in effect is what the pope is.
BTW, early popes, bishops and priests were allowed to marry (until a big Church Council in about the third or fourth century decided to make celibacy the rule), and orthodox priests still are, and even now in the Catholic church there are exceptions to the celibacy rule.

Peter was not a Pope. Peter was call Petra, the rock, by Jesus for his confession that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. It is upon that confession that Jesus built his church. Jesus is the rock that is the foundation of the church and the solid rock of our salvation.

Peter was not a Pope, he was one of the 12 Apostles, & neither does the pope go by the teachings of the Apostle Peter, because Peter was a married man, & he only baptized people in water by complete immursion in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Now ask yourself, how can the pope claim to be following Peter when everything they do is contrary to what Peter done.

You are rock, and upon this rock..
He mentions two rocks in the same sentence and then says "I'm giving you the authority to loosen and bind.."
Look at the other explanations: "Jesus called peter a rock, but the other rock has nothing to do with the rock he was talking about in the same sentence"...huh?
Still confused? Learn classical Hebrew OR Greek. Why ask people who you won't believe?

I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ , unto another gospel
which is not another , but there are some that trouble you and would pervert the gospel of Christ
But though we , or an angel from Heaven preach any other gospel , let him be accursed
