For some people, it makes them better. For others, they use their religious beliefs as an excuse to harm others in the name of God. Some do it so well, they even believe the lie themselves, that they are doing God's work. For others, not having anything to believe in causes depression and desolation.
I think the hypocrites of any faith causes many to reject religion altogether. I also think that the rigidity of many religions sets many people up to fail because no one can live by the perfection standards expected of the faith, and that leads many to behaving even worse than they might have been originally.
EXAMPLE: While growing up we had a neighbor that was a bible thumper. Claimed to be a good christian woman and did her best to let everyone know it. However, every time that woman spoke, it was to put down someone else, gossiping, slandering, lying, etc. It made me think, "How can you claim to be a good anything if all you do is put others down and criticize and gossip?" This is one of the things that turned me against religion, even though I still believe in God. I just believe in him on my own terms and try to live as best as I can according to what common sense I was given.
Sorry to expound on that, but wanted to show what I meant.

If one believes in God and lives the way He intended, it will make them a better person.
There are, however, people who are living under the name Christian, or religion in general for that matter, that are just claiming the name and, for what ever reason, are not fully living up the the standards.
If one is claiming to be a Christian and it doesn't make them a better person, then there is something wrong! (with them and their experience)

When you believe in God He wants to transform you by the power of the Holy Spirit to be like Jesus Christ, the perfect and sinless person that ever lived:
Romans 8:29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Deeds. Just can't say you believe in God but you have to follow it up with action. And walk a walk. then its in your heart. Then you'll actually feel better and will not care because you are a better person, a bigger person, more protected, stronger, more doors open, happier, less problems, etc. I would say better person because you can help people with love.

It can do either. even when i was a Christian preacher I sometime regretted leading some people to the Lord because they went from being a sinner with problems with drugs and alcohol but a good friend and nice person to a holier than thou jerk. some people just can't handle change. I used to say that becoming a Christian would either cause a bad person to be good or a good person to be bad.

depends on if you believe in god, or believe in god through religion. generally when one believes in a god through religion they sometimes become brainwashed and do more harm then good.
