All Christians consider themselves Christian. So yes, they are a Christian sect. They just have slightly different beliefs/interpretations.

When the Isrealites were God's chosen people the surrounding nations celebrated birthdays.
Genesis 40:20-22 Joseph and the pharoah's birthday.
Matthew 14;6-10 Herods birthday they had accepted what the bible termed pagan customs. That is why when Jesus came he condemed the things they did and said the religious leaders were blind guides. Pharisees were condemed.
Jesus was not born on Christmas day. The bible says he died when he was 30 1/2 years old. That would place his death in the spring. He was actually born in the fall.
It was not accepted into Christianity until several thousand years after Jesus died. He fortold a great apostacy to occurr after the apostles died.
The pagan nations were celebrateing this holiday from the beginning of time. A long time before Jesus ever came to the earth. It was worship of the sun, and the stars.
In the winter the evergreen was the only thing still living, so to appease the Sun God they put a star on the top and the other candles on the tree. They had a festival to the sun God very similar to that today. God condemed astrologers and the worship of the Sun God. Many years prior to that.
They were afraid not to do it because a few months after the festival here comes spring. Without this celebration that lasted for weeks, they feared the sun wouldn't come back.
So the early church to convert the pagans allowed this practice. Just as they allowed many other pagan practices.
Then Children are lied to about Santa Clause, he knows weather you are good or bad? Only God knows that, he doesn't even allow the angels to know your thoughts.
So it is seeped in pagan customs and astrology and lies.
So would that be acceptable to God now when it wasn't years ago?

When it began, Christianity was called a sect by the Jews, and a cult by the Romans. In truth, it was neither.

Likewise, as some have said here, Jehovah's Witnesses are not a sect.

We follow no one but the Head of the Christian Congregation, who is the Lord Jesus Christ, the "Faithful and True Witness." (Revelation 3:14)

While on earth, the Lord Jesus witnessed to and for his Father, Jehovah God.

We do the same today.

The Lord Jesus Christ told us to do many things. But not once did he tell us to celebrate his birthday, or even what the date of that was.

Following Christ has nothing to do with celebrating what the world calls "Christmas."

They don't celebrate Christmas because it's not Jesus' birthday plus Jesus never commanded his followers to celebrate his birth, but instead he told them to celebrate his death, because that was what was important.

Luke 22:19, 20-
19 Also, he took a loaf, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them, saying: “This means my body which is to be given in YOUR behalf. Keep doing this in remembrance of me.” 20 Also, the cup in the same way after they had the evening meal, he saying: “This cup means the new covenant by virtue of my blood, which is to be poured out in YOUR behalf.

No, they are not a sect. Some define sect to mean a group that has broken away from an established religion. Others apply the term to a group that follows a particular human leader or teacher. The term is usually used in a derogatory way. Jehovah’s Witnesses are not an offshoot of some church but include persons from all walks of life and from many religious backgrounds. They do not look to any human, but rather to Jesus Christ, as their leader.

A cult is a religion that is said to be unorthodox or that emphasizes devotion according to prescribed ritual. Many cults follow a living human leader, and often their adherents live in groups apart from the rest of society. The standard for what is orthodox, however, should be God’s Word, and Jehovah’s Witnesses strictly adhere to the Bible. Their worship is a way of life, not a ritual devotion. They neither follow a human nor isolate themselves from the rest of society. They live and work in the midst of other people.

Thanks to the few who have said JW are true christians thats the fact you should know follow the sites that Wiccan Rider has shown.

THEIR NAME

Jehovah's Witnesses? Yes, that is the way they refer to themselves. It is a descriptive name, indicating that they bear witness concerning Jehovah, his Godship, and his purposes. "God," "Lord," and "Creator"—like "President," "King," and "General"—are titles and may be applied to several different personages. But "Jehovah" is a personal name and refers to the almighty God and Creator of the universe. This is shown at Psalm 83:18, according to the King James version of the Bible: "That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth."

God's personal name in ancient Hebrew

The name Jehovah (or Yahweh, as the Roman Catholic Jerusalem Bible and some scholars prefer) appears almost 7,000 times in the original Hebrew Scriptures. Most Bibles do not show it as such but substitute "God" or "Lord" for it. However, even in these Bibles, a person can usually tell where the original Hebrew text uses Jehovah because in those places the substituted words are written in large and small capitals, thus: GOD, LORD. Several modern translations do use either the name Jehovah or the name Yahweh. Hence, the New World Translation reads at Isaiah 42:8, "I am Jehovah. That is my name."

Yes. Jehovah's Witnesses are Christians.

We named ourself as Jesus and the apostles named Christians.

Acts 15:14 Governing body of apostles and older men said the "God has turned his attention toward the nations to take out of them a people for his name" also.

Jesus made his Father's name known continually. John 5:43, 44, 17:26. Those who are his enemies hate his name. Rev. 16:9.

Jehovah's Witnesses are not a sect. Sects are, by definition, led by humans. These have existed since early christian times. The congregation in ancient Pergamum, for example, was chastised for "holding fast to the sect of Nicolaeus" (Revelation 2:15) ... a human. We follow Jesus Christ, and worship his father Jehovah God.

Capitol C: With respect, some food for thought. By your reasoning then we really don't know the true names of Daniel, Moses, Isaiah, Nehemiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel etc. All were written as was YHWH, without vowels, yet they developed a common pronunciation. And while you say "they" believe Jehovah is God's name, you might want to take a quick look at Psalm 83:18 using the King James bible versions of 1611 and 1767. Both use the name in that verse.

As far as the text at John 10:30 "I and the father are one" proving Jesus is God? As part of Jesus' final recorded prayer to his father, at John 17:21 Jesus prays that his disciples "may be one just as you, Father, are in union with me and I am in union with you, that they may be in union with us." So then "logically", Jesus here is referring to a vast multi-headed deity?

Thank you, Wiccan Rider, for your fair and informed response.

Jehovah's Witnesses are the only ones who really respect what the Bible says and who preach going from door to door as Jesus said.

"All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work." -- 2 Timothy 3:16, 17

"Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit." -- Matthew 28:19

"And every day in the temple and from house to house they continued without letup teaching and declaring the good news about the Christ, Jesus." -- Acts 5:42

They are warm people who manifest a sincere love and interest towards their brothers and sisters (and not only). Interestingly, the Bible says that Jesus' true disciples will manifest love.

“By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love among yourselves.” -- John 13:35

Even being persecuted, they don't give up to their faith.

"Then people will deliver YOU up to tribulation and will kill YOU, and YOU will be objects of hatred by all the nations on account of my name." -- Matthew 24:9

"I have given your word to them, but the world has hated them, because they are no part of the world, just as I am no part of the world." -- John 24:14

Jesus inaugurated a binding Memorial not of his birth, but of his death, saying: "Keep doing this in remembrance of me." -- Luke 22:19

Jehovah is the most important person in the Universe and the only one who deserves to be worshiped. So, it is logically that the Jehovah's Witnesses would wear God's name.

"”You are my witnesses,” is the utterance of Jehovah, “even my servant whom I have chosen, in order that you may know and have faith in me, and that you may understand that I am the same One. Before me there was no God formed, and after me there continued to be none." -- Isaiah 43:10

"And you are my witnesses. Does there exist a God besides me? No, there is no Rock. I have recognized none." -- Isaiah 44:8

Jesus Christ told us to celebrate his death on Nisan 14 and all around the world in 236 lands we celebrate his memorial. Jesus was not born on Dec 25. the Shepard's where out in the field and in DEC it is the cold and rainy season there. Jesus died when he was 33 1/2 years old, count six month forward and you get October. we are Christians because we follow Jesus Christ footsteps at Matthew 28 verse 19 and 20. Learn what Jehovah Witnesses are about at www.watchtower.org. learn what a cult is. I am tired of people calling us a cult and brainwashed. we are neither. a cult worships man, jim jones and that man who is going to spend his life in prison for marrying cousins. we live in our own homes and our children go to school and many work on jobs like you do. if my brain was wash, great, this way I can worship Jehovah God the Father and his son Jesus Christ better. our doors to the kingdom hall are open and anyone is welcome, rich or poor. and no matter what skin color you are. we love our neighbor as ourselves. at the time that God told Moses I AM What I Am, he was not ready to tell Moses his name. that is not his name. read in the king james bible. ps 83 verse 18. God's name is Jehovah, not Jesus Christ or I am what I am. God is a title. Jesus was praying to his Father in the heaven when he was on earth, you cannot pray to yourself. yes he said you seen me you seen the Father, he was with Jehovah for billions on years before coming to earth so he knows he Father real well. when Jesus was on the stake, he said Father it is done. when Jesus was baptized, Jehovah came down like a dove and said this is my son the beloved. they are not one and the same

If they were true Christians they would be Jesus' witnesses, as he himself said, "You shall be MY witnesses...' Acts 1:8. But they prefer to be Jehovah's witnesses (even though God gave that job to the nation of Israel).

If they were true Christians they would all be filled with the Spirit of God: 'God has also sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a deposit...Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty' (2 Cor 1:22, 3:17). But less than point 1% of them are sealed with the Spirit, which they dismiss as mere power, like electricity, obtainable by individual effort. Almost none of them know the freedom of the sons of God.

If they were Christians they would preach the same message as Paul & the 1st Century Christians: 'For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord' (2 Cor 4:5). The JW gospel only tacks Jesus' death and resurrection on as an afterthought, once they have gone on about a future paradise earth. They preach salvation by works and not by grace.

Given their demotion of Christ from part of the God-head to a mere created being, they couldn't possibly find celebration of Christ's incarnation worth bothering about. That, however, is the least of the problem with JWs.
