There is the big up roar over the Golden Comapss and His Dark Material trilogy. The Religious community says it is basically evil and it kills God. I will tell you right now I never even heard of these books till the bad press about it hit the news. So Yes I bought them and I am enjoying them.

I believe in God and I know this book will not change my view on that. Have people not learned anything? Da Vinci Code? The book was poorly written, the plot was obvious, the characters were flat and lifeless, But it sold millions of copies.
Why? I would have to say the uproar from the Catholic Church.

Its not just books. I mean I could bring up Harry Potter as well. But let's look at movies. The Exorcist. The Church hated this movie. Yet it is one of the top favorite movies still today. Yes its scary but the effects are not that good. When it came out the church protested it. The sales JUMPED!
So if I write a book I'd like bad religious press.
Do you think it sells more books?

there's no press like bad press. People love dirty laundry. DaVinci Code was proof.

Everytime some weasel comes out with a "look what I found!" book, it filters down to places like this and generates conspiracy theory questions for at least a year.

Back in the 1950s, my mother read the original publication of The Last Temptation of Christ for the very reasons you stated. It did not shake her faith in the least and she found it a very well-written book with an interesting premise.

Who said something about "the only thing worse than being talked badly about is not being talked about at all"?

You are right. The Pope or the preacher will tell about how anti-Christian the book is so that the Christians will not buy the book and what do they do - they buy the book and make it the best seller.

Negative religious press DEFINITELY raises awareness of exactly those things that they want to squash.

They're just insecure in their faith. They can't help it. If they weren't, they wouldn't stress out so much.
