I don't debate anyone about atheism. I am because I am. I can lead by example. If others want to be like me or other atheists, it is their choice.
We don't have weekly (or greater) brainwashing sessions, and we are free to choose and do whatever it is that makes us happy without fear of an eternal torment.

Good question.
I have no problem with other people's personal religious beliefs.
I do have a problem when other people incorrectly tell me (and other Catholics) what we believe. For example, that we worship saints.
I am not here to debate. I am not qualified to debate.
I am here to answer questions about God, Christianity, and Catholicism to the best of my limited ability.
With love in Christ.

Debate is fun. I glean wisdom from intelligent debate with those who believe different than I do.
It's the "Who has the biggest wanker" contest that pisses me off. And I'm sad to say that it's my side that ends up 'whipping it out' the most.
EDIT:
As for your question of "What difference does it make?", Christians believe that:
1) They are commanded by God to share their faith with the world;
2) The eternal consequences of belief and disbelief are drastic, and they want to save as many souls from condemnation as they can.

You do not see much debate among the atheists an pagan because we do not force our beliefs on others but Christianity does, so the debate gets heated.
When an atheist who does not believe in god or hell is told he or she is going there, then I can see why they start debating issues.

They are not comfortable with their beliefs.
If you know you are right, you don't debate.
You let the truth reveal itself.
Oh, and "they" refers to both atheists and Christians and anyone else that attempts to force what they believe on others.

Good point. I've asked the same thing, and have gotten the same answer from both sides: to save them.
