Yes!!! A heavy bag will help you develop strength in your blows as well as burn calories and tone muscles. If you buy a speed bag, that will improve your hand/eye coordination like you wouldn't believe!!
I love both of my bags - it's awkward at first, especially with the speed bag, but once you get used to it, you will be amazed at how much more quickly you react to things with your hands.
Definitely a good buy, even if you don't practice martial arts (and I don't ...anymore)

A heavy bag is one of the best pieces of equipment that you can buy. Not only will it help develop the power of your techniques and the speed and power and of your combinations but it will also save your joints, ligaments, and tendons from wear and tear. When you throw techniques or combinations with speed and power and only hit the air it can sometimes cause hyper extension or strain on things. By using a bag and making contact you avoid this, especially if you are doing some serious training like several times per week. It also gives you a target to aim for and when you work with a bag you not only watch the way it swings and moves to have an idea if you hit it well but also the sound it makes when you make contact. A side kick or jump spinning side kick is a good example; if you hit it at optimum distance and make clean, solid contact you won't feel how hard you hit it. The bag will make a heavy thwack sound and you only see the impact-not feel it. If you make indirect contact you will hear a scrapping sound sometimes and the heavy thwack sound will not be near as noticeable nor the impact with which you hit it. So bags are great for helping to teach you your optimum distance for your techniques and combinations as well.

YEAH! =D
Go for it. The real question is WHY NOT?
But anyways...
Good training bags are sort of expensive. I have a cheap one and I practice everyday...just make sure you don't waste your money and not use it. What a waste that would be!
But before I could even afford a training bag, I went to class an hour early and practiced. My studio didn't mind. They were actually very happy and encouraged it! I would stay an hour or two after class on weekends too. I think that would be better also because when I practiced, the masters and instructors kept an eye on me and gave me really awesome tips. It was really great! Sometimes, when I do something wrong, or get a habit of doing something incorrect, they would inform me so I would lose the bad habit...But as long as you're practicing. Go for it.
If you're practicing the form of a kick for performance rather than sparring, I suggest practicing in the air. I hate kicking in the air but that's the way to do it. (lol)
So yeah. Good luck on that!

Actually punching bags are a source of a lot of debate in my school.
We use punching bags for iron bone training and shields for technical punching, but we don’t wrap and we don’t use gloves… the reasoning behind that is if you are on the street you won’t have wrap on…
So if you hit a heavy bag full force without wrap you can REALLY hurt yourself! Especially, if you are new to the activity! Even using a heavy bag just for back fists, open hand strikes and kicks can cause some serious pain/irritation. You can get past the pain by working through it over time, but it does take a lot of time, and I wouldn’t recommend it unless you are being taught by someone who understands iron bone.
SO
To sum up
Heavy bags are great, fun, workout good for cardio great for conditioning… but I feel they give you a false sense of knowledge… hitting a heavy bag while gloved and wrapped is VERY different then hitting a person with a bare hand.
