I have experimented with Tamron and Sigma lenses and while they were very sharp, I found them to produce a lot of flare so I went back to using Nikon lenses. Buy Canon if you can, but Sigma does make some good lenses.... just be aware that if you are pointing the camera toward the light source, you might see a lack of contrast and/or lots of spots where the light is bouncing around inside the lens.

Do a web search on each companies offering in that focal range. You'll find plenty of reviews and samples from people all over the place.
I've found that for third party lenses, Tamron has given me the better performance in the focal lengths that I needed. That is when the Nikon equivalent is too expensive, or in your case the Canon equivalent.

Tamron are CHEAP lenses, not the best, BUT usaully affordable. Sigma is the way to go if your looking for quality and longevity. And the focal length of the lens really depends on WHAT you want to use it for? Take your camera with you and try out the lenses!

B&H buyers rate the Tamron 4.7 out of 5.0 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=NavBar&A=getItemDetail&Q=&sku=423725&is=REG&si=rev#anchorToReadReviews and the Sigma scores the same http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=NavBar&A=getItemDetail&Q=&sku=163662&is=REG&si=rev#anchorToReadReviews Read the reviews for some insight.
Go here and scroll all the way to the bottom of the page. You'll find links to reviews on some Tamron and Sigma lenses, although I don't see a 70-300...

Go over to www.photozone.de and look in the Lens Performance Survey section.
Users don't rate either of them very highly. Canon's does a bit better.
