I was pretty shocked when I heard about it on the radio this morning, but the story ended by saying that the Pentagon said it was a mistake.
Under the circumstances, I choose to believe them. To do otherwise would require a complete suspension of belief in all that is rational and sane. I don't think you'll see this happen again.
Edit:
Neal Boortz is just now talking about how the Pentagon reports this was a "mistake," and that none of the soldiers will have to be paying any of the money back. People need understand that none of this was initiated by "the Bush Administration."
More:
Here is a link to a Washington Post story, explaining that the Government Accountability Office said how "long-recognized problems with military computer systems led to the soldiers being dunned for an array of debts related to everything from errors in paychecks to equipment left behind on the battlefield." It's from over a year ago, though.

There was a question posted about this yesterday... but below is the government's policy regarding Enlistment Bonuses. If an injured soldier (injury NOT due to misconduct or negligence) finds him/herself in the situation where their EB is being recouped... then a MISTAKE has been made by their personnel/finance office. It really has nothing to do with the "government" trying to give these soldiers the shaft.
They're doing that with this inane war in Iraq.
I really do hope that this information can get to soldiers who find themselves in this position so that they can go to their Personnel/Finance office loaded with the correct information.
"Members under EB contract who voluntarily fail to
complete the entire contracted time in the rating, skill, or
program for which the bonus is paid are ineligible to receive
any future EB payments and may have any EB already received recouped."
"b. Enlistment Bonus payments will stop, but recoupment of
payments already received will not be required, if a member
becomes ineligible for an EB for any of the reasons below:
(1) Disability, injury, or illness not the result of
misconduct or willful neglect, or not incurred during a period
of unauthorized absence."

there grew to become right into a query published approximately this the former day... yet below is the government's coverage on the subject of Enlistment Bonuses. If an injured soldier (injury no longer as a results of misconduct or negligence) unearths him/herself in the region the place their EB is being recouped... then a MISTAKE has been made via their workers/finance place of work. It extremely has no longer something to do with the "government" attempting to grant those infantrymen the shaft. they are doing that with this inane war in Iraq. i in my opinion do desire that this suggestion can get to infantrymen who locate themselves in this place so that they are in a position to pass to their workers/Finance place of work loaded with the final suggestion. "members below EB contract who voluntarily fail to end the comprehensive shriveled time in the score, skill, or application for which the bonus is paid are ineligible to acquire any destiny EB money and can have any EB already gained recouped." "b. Enlistment Bonus money will provide up, yet recoupment of money already gained should not be required, if a member will become ineligible for an EB for any of the justifications below: (a million) incapacity, injury, or ailment no longer the effects of misconduct or willful overlook, or no longer incurred throughout a era of unauthorized absence."

I can't give you a current source, but can give you a personal anecdote:
in 1998, one of MY troops, a freshly frocked AW1 (E-6) took his flight physical and was grounded because of hearing loss. THIS forced him out of his "rate" (NEC/MOS) and gave him a medical discharge. He was in year 2 of a 3 year reelistment bonus, and finishing his 12th year of service.
After his Discharge, he wrote because he'd gotten a notice from DFAS (Defense Finance Services) that expected him to pay the bonus back.
Ah GEE THANKS Government for the LOVE & RESPECT.

i looked at the links provided above.....and i also googled it, not one of the sites reporting it are actual news sites..except that KDKA which is a local news site and the only information they have is interviews with one soldier and his mother, no rebuttal, no copy of the letter.......most of the sites are "secret " news sites that list more propoganda than you can shake a stick at......im not gonna say its completely untrue, but really why havent any NEWS sites reported it?

It is not true.
The whole furor appears to be over one incident where somebody made a mistake.
