Stop living in "fool's paradise",and do not believe in disinformation. At today's,21 November 2007,Bank of China exchange rates, the RMB was trading at 733.59 to a $,no bank here in China will pay you the rate that you have quoted.
There is no difference in the open market rate, even if there is any, it would be of a couple of mao, whereas the risk of getting counterfeit notes from these people is high.

That is impossible! Maybe 15 years ago it was common. Nobody will give you 9.50

If you get offered 9.50 I am sure you will get fake banknotes - and China has plenty of those.

Just because of the fake bills I would only change in banks, or hotels.

9.5!? You should check the financial news regarding the exchange rate. It can't be 9.5 right now. Some of the notes could be fake. Just go to the bank, you don't want to get fake notes and get in trouble , do you??
