The Bible does not forbid private interpretation. What 2 Peter 1:20 is saying is that the scriptures came not from human inspiration or thought, but from God. Now we can argue whether this is true or not since it's a well accepted fact by biblical scholars that the writings in the Bible are definitely products of their times and places and often can reflect the personal feelings and biases of the writers. So it could be that not everything you read in the Bible is the actual word-for-word voice of God. I tend to agree with this point of view.

Peter meant that all the "prophecies" of the New Test are by Jesus the Christ himself, not their own, refering to the other testaments by the apostles.
BUT, I do think Fundies feel they are working on commission, instead of the Flat Rate (you know, basic salvation, eternal life, no frills pass thru the Pearly Gates) they want Position! and the extra guilt usually results in a bigger collection for the Mega Church fund, which has an auxilary golf course! Catholic Free of COURSE! ... oh, you tricky little avatar! this was a setup wasn't it? to interpret that verse, meant interpreting! hmmm, maybe if you do not understand it for yourself ... ? don't ask a Fundie? ok, I must stop! I haven't been to R & $ for so long .... no NO! I will answer more questions! I have not yet begun to defile myself! yessss!

9And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. 21For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
This is a different version of the bible same verse plus the ones after/before they say same thing, but you should read further to know what it truly means the bible is a book to wear you have to read on to understand any of it you cant just pick a verse out and understand it.

It is saying that no prophet spoke his own personal understanding of the issue. It was the Holy Spirit who spoke through him. The prophet was not part of some grand scheme to force a plot that did not come from God.
Hand in hand with that is that no prophesy is understood before its fulfillment.
The answer you were given does not fit your question properly.
A nonbeliever will read the Bible and have revealed to him the basis for believing. If he accepts the claims of Jesus, in other words has faith, and is obedient to follow his commands he will be saved. Through the salvation of Christ he will receive the Holy Spirit, who will show things that person could never even dream up.
The Holy Spirit will guide those of a good heart to saving knowledge of Christ. Once that salvation is made sure the Holy Spirit lives within that person and testifies more deeply of the things of God.

Bah, it's just another purposefully confusing and meaningless line in the Bible designed to cause you to blank your mind with it's impossibility and contradiction. Just like insane admonitions that even thinking of evil is as bad as doing it to someone, it would be impossible not to try to interpret what the Bible is saying and whether it means one thing or another. Nothing is written clearly enough to avoid such thoughts. Doubly difficult because most people are reading a Bible that's been translated, edited and altered for a couple thousand years, by people.

The different books of the bible were written by earlier people who tried, in their own way, to understand the creator. These are the words of men, passed down from generation to generation. God has everything built into his system. If you do right you get rewarded and if you do wrong you get smacked. Most of the time of course. We are all born to die.

They are so busy making their homophobia into idolatry, that they overlook everything else whether it's adultery, private interpretation, "picking and choosing" from Scripture, greed, etc. It's all okay to them if they can make a buck off the misery they cause gay and lesbian American taxpaying citizens.

This question sounds like a private interpretation of the bible to me. The bible doesn't forbid private interpretation, just that prophesy doesn't exist because of one person. You have to put individual verses in proper context. Read the next verse.

Your question is illogical because you misunderstand the verse. It's saying that the Bible's writings are not originated from men. Not from a personal source, it comes from God. Any reader of any writing interprets what they read. I wonder if you are confused on this point or just trying to bash Christians. Hope the former.
