If your television has an ATSC tuner, but no QAM tuner, you'll be able to receive DTV over the air, but not from cable unless you have a cable tuner.
QAM is a cable form of ATSC, and you need a QAM tuner to receive digital TV on cable.

Yes, some Vizio, I think TVs, have ATSC tuner but not QAM.
You are correct, without a QAM you can't get cable channels without a cable set-top box.

ATSC tuners without QAM?
They're built together, always will be built together...You'll always be able to get the Standard package channels from Cable. It's when you want the PREMIUM channels that you want a box or CABLE-CARD® for it.....
Cable-Card® ready TV sets may sound nice, but those TVs STILL need the box. Cable-Card locks up more than the Motorola HD boxes do...
Their plan to make you only buy the CARD backfired on them.
So, get the box and don't worry about it....

that unquestionably relies upon. you're waiting to desire to evaluate the alerts attainable to you. The sat field takes RF from the satellite tv for pc LNBs and demodulates it to video and audio or remodulates video and audio to RF as NTSC analog channels 3 or 4. if your laptop tuner additionally has a video and audio enter of a few form, you need to use a video and audio output from the sat field. if your laptop tuner additionally gets NTSC, you need to use the analog channel 3 or 4 RF output of the sat field. The sat field RF output does not output ATSC digital. if your laptop tuner has neither an NTSC analog tuner nor a video and audio enter, you isn't waiting to prepare it to pass RF or video and audio out of your sat field on your laptop, you're waiting to desire to get yet another form of device to attach on your laptop, preferably some thing which will grab video and audio instead of basically an RF tuner with ATSC/QAM decoder.
