Okay, so I was out to dinner with my brother in-law, my nieces and nephews, and his boss and his family. I am from out of town and never met his boss or his family. At the end of the meal the boss is paying for the dinner, do I offer him money there at the table or offer afterwards or offer no money but thanks for the dinner? My brother in-law said he wants to take us out to dinner and I am invited.

I don't have any problems paying, I just felt awkward, like would it be insulting to offer to pay? What is the expectation? I don't want to seem presumptuous either. Is a "thank you" enough?

You are but 1 additional guest, among other people who enjoy the meals. You are invited & it looks to me like a planned dinner , so if it's me I won't pay/ offer to pay. My best courtesy would be to try to make a conversation with the boss.

Yes, a thank you is enough. Your brother-in-law and his boss are well prepared to pay since it's they who invited you.
