Actually the farthest trains, going crosstown, that go out from that area is Times Square (42nd Street) and if you are coming from 34th Street and a railroad, Penn Station. Either or, if you have a Metrocard and use the subway, you can transfer for either the M42 (42nd Street) or the M34 (34th Street) to get to the Javits Center (it's a huge black glass building).

Being that the M42 and M34 are crosstown routes, none of them go by South Ferry. If you want to head to South Ferry, your best bet would be to get the M42 back to Times Square and then grab the "1" train to the last stop (sit in one of the first 5 cars). If you want to speed the trip a bit, at Times Square take the "2" or "3" train and transfer for the "1" at Chambers Street.

Here's how you do it, step-by-step:

Take an MTA subway train to 42nd Street/Port Authority, then use one of the exits that puts you onto 42nd Street. The Port Authority building is huge and can be confusing; so if you're not sure, ask an employee . . or just whoever you see. New Yorkers are friendly!

Once on 42nd Street, you'll walk west three long blocks, until you reach the West Side Highway. From there, walk south along the West Side Highway until you reach the Javitz Center, which begins at 40th Street. It's enormous, so you won't miss it.

Enjoy your trip!

buses go to port authority. trains go to penn station or port authority. this all depends on where you're coming from and which line you're planning to ride.
