They told me that Jesus was not born until the New Testament.
I was always told that Christians believed he always existed and is quoted ""I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!"

I am not a Christian. But anyone who is a Christian and says that Jesus wasn't Jesus before he was born is wrong. Look at Tracy's answer. What do you think John was saying? How long has Jesus existed? Col 1:16-17 says Jesus existed before “all things.” Before “all things were created both in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible.” (NASB) In fact, it says that Jesus created all these things. So then, who is Jesus? The following verses will answer several important questions. The first set of questions will tell us who the “Word” is in John 1:1. Next we will discover the meaning of the term “Son of God.”

John 1:1-3
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
He was with God in the beginning.
Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made.

Its not true.As a matter of fact Jesus was already there when God created the earth. It is Jesus and the holy spirit to whom God was spoken when He made the earth.(read Genesis 1:26) and John 1:1-5,explains that Jesus is with God since the beginning. He is the "Word" as John stated in this chapter.

Before Jesus' incarnation, He was the Logos. See John 1.
The Logos existed before the Flood; Jesus was not there during the Flood.

When we count yrs, don't we always say CE or BCE? The CE starts with Jesus's birth so clearly he wasn't around all the time. The flod was much longer before that.

This I say and testify in The Lord , that ye henceforth walk not as other gentlies walk ,
in the vanity of their mind , having the understanding darkened , being alienated from
the life of God , through the ignorance in them , because of the blindness of their hearts

I'm sure they were referring to Jesus' human existence as opposed to his spiritual existence. The great flood happened before his human existence.

He was Jehovah before He was born on Earth. He has been the spokesperson of our Heavenly Father.

Jesus was around long before the world was created:
Jhn 17:24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
