THis is not a slam. I actually prefer most of the questions of atheists to that of Christians or most other religious people on here, but I have noticed this. There seems to be a desire to convert people to atheism, as if it were a religion. Does this create a paradox?

If you are trying to get someone to adopt your beliefs or non beliefs I believe you are trying to convert them, I'm sorry that is the definition.

You're not the only one who's noticed this.

I'm cool with atheists and atheism, as long as they incorporate secular humanism into it.

What I DON'T like is fundamental atheism. Fundamental atheists are just as bad, if not worse, than fundamental Christians.

This is just my point of view, but when faced with a barrage of lengthy replies full of quotes from the bible and not much else, most of which have nothing to do with the question asked, I know I tend to get a little preachy. It's often just a way of letting off steam. Anyway, I doubt most of the 'quoters' come back to the question once they've done their quoting. I guess we'd just like to see more personal input, more individual thought, not just quotes from the bible.

No paradox. We're not preaching, but teaching, my friend. There's a world of a difference. We don't want to 'convert' them, we simply want them to look more critically at their own beliefs, and hopefully.. drop them. You can't convert somebody to Atheism, you can only break them of their faith. It's like you can smoke Marlboro, or you can convert to camel, or you can quit smoking. Atheism is quitting religion.

I think an Atheist knows the reality of there being a God. They are just looking for excuses not to believe. If others follow their theology, they won't feel so bad about their future (or lack of,)

Nope. Just a load of Atheists pissed off or bored so taking the piss out of/trying to prove wrong religious people, lol,

I'm agnostic so i'm allowed to do it without any ramifications (apart from a ban or two)

:D

We don't really preach. We mainly use the tool of christians (their bible) and give our view on the matter.
We point out different things and sometimes learn things.

sounds like a paradox to me

The paradox is not between belief in God in non-belief in god, it is between belief and logic.

Misery loves company. And of course there's the persecution complex they all suffer from.

Am I the only one who notices the irony of the first answer to the question? Atheism is the biggest myth of them all.
