My wallet was stolen with my Social Security Card and Birth certificate in it. How can i figure out if someone has used my social security number to get a credit card? I have no other credit cards, but how can i figure out if THEY got one using MY information? I would REALLY appreciate an answer. Thank you so much!

If you had your personal identification stolen, you should first notify the police. Next, contact one of the three major credit reporting agencies and let them know. They will put a fraud alert on your report, which I believe is good for one year. Anyone who tries to open an account in your name will be stopped.

In your question, you say you have no 'other' credit cards. If you mean you don't have any to begin with, that is one less worry. If you do have one, you should already have notified them, they would have canceled the card & issued you a new one.

Next, you should go to www.ftc.gov and file a report of the theft. This is the arm of government that tracks ID theft, which is one of the fastest growing crimes in the US.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act requires Experian, Equifax and TransUnion credit reporting agencies to provide you with a free credit report, 1 per year. You can go to www.annualcreditreport.com to sign on. Some sites say they are free, but they actually enroll you in a program that you end up paying for. The above site, is the one that is actually free. You may also call 1-877-322-8228 to request a free report if you don't want to do it online. Once you receive your report, you can see who your creditors are and if anyone has attempted to open an account in your name.

Final piece of advice: Never EVER carry your social security card and birth certificate with you. Most places that require you to show ID only need an unexpired, government issued photo ID. If you don't have a license, you can go to the license bureau and get a state issued photo ID.

Obtain copies of each of the three major credit reporting bureau's files for yourself. They are free, and you are entitled to one free each year, from each of the three. These reports won't give you a credit score, but they WILL allow you to see any activity which may have occurred, including the issuance of any credit cards.

after getting the credit report, you might ALSO want to get a driver's license with a new number and a SSN with a new number.

Since even if they haven't used the id to get a credit card yet, they still might be keeping your ID numbers for later use.

You had better call them up(the office where its issued) and tell them your problem and ask them to block your SSN. Later you could go on to get another one issued....
