took Goju for 5 years. In my opinion, if you want to learn an art form, and get in shape, it's fine.

But to learn to defend yourself, there are WAY better martial art forms. Proof: watch UFC...there are no fighters with Goju as their discipline.

I quit Goju when I went to a tournament and threw a side kick to a guys ribs but he ducked and took it in the face. They threw me out of the tourny for facial contact. I went to kickboxing instead, where if you hit a guy in the face, you gain points, not get banned from a tourny.

If you want to defend yourself, try muy tai or something.

As said above, Goju Ryu is typically Okinawan. And Goju Kai is typically from Yamaguchi Gogen. And there are many groups within both of these...

I would say they are definitely worth studying (over 20 years of Goju "under my belt"..haha). And just to clarify, GojuKai isnt just punching and kicking... but it can seem that way since many - if not most- of the GojuKai groups do a lot of point tournaments.

Goju Ryu is Okinawan Karate. It is a very circular art with many, many hidden techniques in the movements. The foundation of Goju Ryu is Sanchin, which is a hard internal training.

Goju Kai is Gogen Yamaguchi's Japanese Goju. It's not the complete art. This is mearly kick/punch.

Yamaguchi did not learn Goju Ryu from the founder, Chojun Miyagi. He may have met him.

This is all fact.

Goju-ryu is a great Okinawan Karate style. It's quite effective, with a lot of grappling (Kakie) and striking, as well as learning how to take a strike. (Kime)
PS> Before too many rules were added to MMA events, there were a few Goju guys who did very well. (Even 2nd place in one of the UFCs though I forget which one.. maybe UFC2) Goju-ryu has a lot of small joint manipulation, which are now illegal in UFC.

GOJU RYU is MIYAGI lineage
GOJU KAI is YAMAGUCHI lineage but still in the MIYAGI line.

YAMAGUCHI learnt his GOJU from SENSEI MARUTO a high rank of CHOJUN MIYAGI the founder of GOJU so essentially it is the same thing any differences would be minimal.

GOJU didn't have a name before MIYAGI gave it one it was essentially NAHA TE of NAHA province OKINAWA.
He named it from a line in the BUBISHI
"BREATHING IS BOTH HARD (go) and soft(ju)
