why are you letting your child be unsupervised by traffic in the first place?

I wonder the same thing about the hot stove, too.

And, if you put them in a dangerous situation where they didn't know right from wrong, already, where they didn't understand the gave danger that they could be in if they made the wrong move and, then, they randomly chose to do the dangerous thing, why are they the ones getting hit or punished? Why not you?

If a young child is left unsupervised in the front yard and gets injured or killed in the street, the parents can get charged with neglect. There's a case in my county right now where a little boy was killed by a car at age 5, and he had been left unattended. His parents got charged with neglect.

If a child is left unsupervised by traffic or a hot stove that is one thing-and the parent is definately at fault.

However, children naturally test their boundaries. I have been in the front yard with my son-playing with him and supervising him-and he has tried to run right past me into traffic. I don't think just because he made a dash for the road makes me a bad parent (I was standing *right there* and stopped him before anything bad happened to him)-and you better believe I spanked his butt!

A swat on the butt hurts a lot less than getting hit by a car.

My son is only 5 months old. I never said I let him near traffic or a hot stove. HE"S ONLY 5 MONTHS. All kids do things that could get them hurt. I was at work one day. Well Im a hairstylist, and while the Mom was paying her son dashed out the door when it opened, towards traffic. She swated him on the butt instead of standing there telling him no or trying to talk to him. And honestly that saved his life. If she wouldnt have spanked him he would have ran right out into traffic. So how is that wrong?? Tell me that?? Sometimes things happen like in her situation. Her son was 4 and she was holding a baby. Things happen, accidents happen, I would never put my son in any dangerous situation, but I saw that first hand. If that was my son I would have done the same thing. Yes, if the child is unattended or neglected then its the parents fault. But Im talking about cases like hers. Its common sense.

Ok seriously, I want to know why the thumbs down??? What would be wrong with that situation?? Look at KNUCKLEH.
Look at his situation. I dont understand. Explain to me please why that would be wrong. I would rather spank my child than try to talk to him while he's running towards traffic. Seriously, it happens all the time. Kids will get away from their parents and run away, towards traffic. I did it as a kid, as my Mom chased my and spanking me good. I never went towards traffic again. Now if she told me no or tried to talk to me, I wouldnt have stopped. But seriously, someone give me an explaination why that would be wrong. I mean obviously that woman and my Mother saved 2 childrens lives. You would rather lose your child because your against it??????

Thank you for posting that comment. Im glad someone else see's that point. No one else does. I dont understand. I mean things like that happen. Every kid takes off running from their parents at sometime. And unfortunately its towards traffic in some cases.I would never leave my son unsupervised, but things like that happen, and you have to do whatever it takes to keep them from getting hurt. You hit that right on the nail. Thumbs up for you!!!

Once a person's child gets to the age where spanking is an option, they should seriously consider if they are going to spank. MY SON responds MUCH better to timeouts. It is also EASIER on me. I don't have to check my temper, because I'm not going to hit him. PERIOD.
I could spank him ALL day and he wouldn't care. He'd go right back to what he was doing and do it again.
Good luck and best wishes.

One time my mom was holding my baby sister as I started to run out the door while she was paying at the beauty salon. I ran away because it hurt and ran right into a pick up truck. I was never able to walk again. I always wondered why she didnt grab my hand to stop my from running, if she was able to swat my butt. I hate her.
