My
12yr. old son got really REALLY sun burned. We were in mexico for 2 whole weeks, swimming almost every day. The skin is all ashy and peeling, literally there is dead skin just sitting on the layer through out his entire body.

What can I do to fix this, get his skin back to norma and ease the pain?

Sounds like a very deep second degree burn. The skin is "debreeding." This means it is cleaning itself out, rejecting the dead skin. However, you should get him to a doctor. Preferably a burn specialist. Burns can lead to NASTY infections...some even life threatening. And if not properly cared for, can cause even nastier scaring. I was seriously burned over a large portion of my body, and spent two months in a burn ward. I've seen it all. So I know what I'm talking about.

Get him to a doc if only to ease the pain. As for home remedies...which I dont really recommend...make sure he takes lots of vitamin e oilcaps, and you can rub vitamin e oil on the wound. (It works better from the inside, but it will soothe the pain a bit if applied locally.)

Dont mess around with this. It doesnt sound like a typical sunburn. It probably needs medical attention.

Make him sit in a tub of luke warm water with vinegar, about a cup full to a half full tub of water, have him pour the water over his body, then when he gets out, have him pat dry his skin, and you can rub some aloe gel on him, it will be very soothing and ease the pain some, in the mean time, have him wear only clothing that is soft to the touch so that it will not rub the burn and make it more sore., soft cotton T-shirts and soft cotton sweat pants work wonderful for a sunburned body, or if you live where it is warm, wearing shorts with the soft cotton T-shirts do great too, keep the aloe gel on him at all times it will help it heal faster.

It may be a little late, but you could have him stand in a cold shower for around 30 minutes. I have found that sunburns react best if you can get cold water on them immediately. When you get a burn the best thing is to take the heat off as fast as possible. That is by using a shower at room temp and then increasing the cold water and then stand in it for at least a half hour. It still might help. The local Shirner's hospital, places bad burns in ice to remove the heat. I would not use vinegar, it will irritate the burn. I would also keep a close eye on the burn for any type of infection and go to a Dr. at the first sign of an infection.

Dampen a paper towel with vinegar OR milk, and dab it gently on the burn, to reduce the heat of the burn.
Give him acetiminophen (tylenol) for pain; give him 2 pills of 325 mg every 4 hours or so.
Get an off brand, over the counter burn relief cream or spray, and apply it gently. Vitamin A&D ointment might be too thick, so if thats what you choose, warm it in hot water until its soft before placing it on him.
Make him drink LOTS of water or milk, and eat some eggs or meat.

Get some aveeno bath liquid with colloidal oatmeal and stir in a half cup of baking soda into a warm tub. Aspirin to relieve the pain. The skin will peel on it's on, though it will take a couple of weeks depending on how far down he got burned. I do find myself musing how it was you & your husband were unable to persuade said 12 year old to use sunscreen and cover up when out in the sun throughout the two weeks, though.

You need to get him to a doctor now.
The longer you leave this untreated the worse it is going to get.
You may be embarrassed at having to explain the circumstances but it is better that you get it treated properly. Burns can and do lead to very deep scarring and this would mean that he would probably need to stay out of the sun for many years to come if not for life.
Please go to the doctor now.

Oh dear...

Well, you could lather him liberally with aloe gel and vinegar. If that doesn't ease him, take him to a doctor. That does sound bad.
