Yes, at least people used the threat of god to control others.
Doesn't mean God is real of not. God may not care.
Personally I think God is just laughing at those sorry powerhungry religious people.

Yes, the threat of 'god' has been used to control people since the beginning of the Abrahamic religions. It's a sklavmoral - it makes slaves feel better about their lot in life because they think they'll be in heaven and their masters will be in hell.
Then, in order to keep the masters rich and in charge, the church propped them up by creating a bunch of guilty sexually repressed people that could be manipulated into waging war against people that didn't do anything to them. The Pagans were sexually free so they didn't make good soldiers - it's hard to work up a righteous urge to slaughter innocent people when you've just been laid. It takes love of god and country to do that. Without faith and patriotism, people would stay home and not fight, and the church and the rulers wouldn't be able to amass power and wealth.

Ahh. A high school Junior that just took a class that inspired him to rebel.
Yes, Fluffy, God is a figure to be used to keep you in line. Institutions have employed, twisted, perverted, profited from that since the Zoroastrian. Ultimately though, what you have to realize is this: God is not represented by any institution here on this earth. God is represented by You and you alone. The transaction isintended to be intimate, a conduit only there to magnify, confirm, support, enjoy. You are the one that has to lie down every night. No religion will have you wake up. Only God will have you wake up.
Your indictment of the politics of religion is on the right track. Just dont indict religion on the way.
Good luck on your journey.
