The expired meat is sent for rendering, where it is chemically altered so as to be unfit for human consumption so to be sure it doesn't accidently find it's way back into the human food chain, and then it is sold to pet food companies. You see it listed as "chicken byproduct" or "beef byproduct", etc.

Run a search, there are plenty of articles that explain this process, and if you think about it, it really does explain why our pets have so many more allergies and health problems than ever before.

Depends what company you're talking about. Some companies will give credit for items not sold. Some don't and the store writes it off. Before it expires ( about 3 days ) the store will put it at a discount. The store will not sell an expired item knowingly.

Several things actually:
Depending on the type of food it is still good for a small bit of time past the Exp. date so they will either
1) Give to a local food bank/church/charity organization for the needy

2) Sell at a very low cost to a "grocery outlet" type store to be resold to the public at 50-80% off the regular price.
Example : Tyson Full Cooked Chicken (reg. 9.99) at the outlet stores near me you can buy them at (sale 1.99)

3) Sent back to manufacturer for some small sort of profit

4) " Damage/Spoil it Out in Inventory" and THROW AWAY!

They usually give them away, or sell them very cheaply, to stores like Rainbow Market. either that, or they chuck them.

They can't sell them themselves, becasue it's expired. Stores like Rainbow Market have specaial licenses to allow them to sell it.

An expired food is rarely bad at the expired date. It's a few more weeks before you have to throw it away. "Fragile" foods such as milk, sometimes spoil even before the expiration dates, while "Tough" foods remain good even after the certified expiration date.

From what I know they sell them cheaply. At my local supermarket there is a shelf with expired foods selling at like 1/8 of the original price. Consume at own risk! haha

dollar stores sometimes get it. I also ran into a loaf of bread where they actually just put a new sticker over the printed on date (with a later date of course)
