Why would i cry more now than i did over it four years ago, and i also have tons of guilt, like i should have looked at shelters. i have no idea what happened to him and i always think the worst. I was not even the one who left the door open.

About two months ago I lost my cat of 14 years.

I feel very guilty as well.

That's how it is, I guess. My cat would stay in bed with me when I was too sick to get out of bed. My cat would not leave me alone in a room. She would follow me everywhere.

Sometimes sad times come back to us when we are feeling down about other things, or when something happens that reminds us of past sad events.
I know it can be very hard to move on when you allow yourself to feel guilty over things that were out of your control. You might always feel sad & a bit remorseful about what happened - it's only natural when you lose something you cared about, but I think perhaps you're allowing yourself to dwell on it a bit too much. What's done is done. You can't go back in time, and you don't know if anything bad happened to your cat - the chances are just as good that he "adopted" a new family & was happy. You're getting upset over the unknown which isn't really sensible when you think about it.
Try to keep your mind more occupied so you don't think about it so much. Try to spend more time with friends, and doing things that are fun. I think your problem is mainly that you're feeling a little depressed, and to justify it, you've unconsciously used your cat as a reason to feel so sad.
None of us is perfect. You learnt your lesson back then - I bet if you ever get another cat, you'll be extra careful, won't you!
Take it as a learning opportunity, and give yourself a break. Go out, keep busy & have some fun. There's nothing wrong with missing your cat. Just don't let it dominate you - that won't achieve anything.
Best wishes.

im sorry your upset! ive been through this as well!! sometime you will just never get over it, like me. i notice i cry alot as well. i had a cat that became an outdoor cat, he was amazingly smart. and after a while, he just never came home ( i was 8) and i still wonder about him. and wonder what happened to him. you are still greiveing.. it may take some time. i understand you feel guilty. i did as well. and it really hurts. but in time you will get through all this. it can be such a hurtful time.even 4 years later. you have probably been thinking alot about him, and just worrying and wondering makes u upset. good luck and hope all gets better.

hi sorry to here about your cat i lost one about 4 years ago to and it is awful 2 years ago i got another one the same colour (ginger and white) and it has made it easier for us all but he has not replaced the one i lost you just need to try and move on from this. i looked and rang up everywhere but no joy so go and get another one similar and enjoy the cat. this is the bad thing about cats they just go of. if you get another one get it micro chipped so if it is handed in to a rescue or vets for some reason then they can trace it back to you safe and sound. hpoe this helps just think of all the fun things your cat did.

its ok just by another cat that looks simular or the same personality at the animal shelter. Did you know that if a animal is at the shelter more than 2 weeks they kill the animals. im pretty sure the animals will love u more for adopting it and saving its life.

I'm not exactly sure why you are so upset about this lately, but perhaps a professional counselor can help you. I'm sorry about your cat.
