You can't just pick and choose your beliefs when it comes to a religion centered around an ancient document that spells out what you must believe... Yes I can understand taking some things as a metaphor...But then again who is to say what is a metaphor and what is not?? Also if people can believe in the bible why not the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Gospel of Phillip and Mary?? they both make just as much reference to Jesus and his disciples, and has just as much credibility as the Bible...This is just another example of Christians picking and choosing what to believe...What do you think??

Yes, it is always pick and choose, then render a meaning that has nothing to do with the content. That is why the so called bible believers believe as they do. They pick and choose. The bible teachers that are the driving force know nothing and usually are church pawns. Unfortunately its the youngest that are subjected to the uneducated teachers that tell them stories and play games with biblical information. It is pretty scary out there. Glad I've grown up and had a real education in the bible and world cultures. Someone earlier mentioned a course in the Bible as Literature and it's a great way of understanding the bible, to bad so many of the church bible pawns don't take the course. I come to this site for research and I can honestly say I cannot believe what I see. The questions are unbelievable. I don't and cannot conceive of what these people are learning at their churches.

I believe in the whole Bible and in the Dead Sea Scrolls, but I do not believe in these other books that you have mentioned because they were not written by Christians, they were written by Agnostics. They contradict what the Bible says because they do not believe in the divinity of Jesus the Christ.

God's word was written so Prophets could relate it to all, or He spoke it Himself. Jesus spoke it and then told His Disciples what to do and say. Then the Holy Spirit came upon them in the Book of Acts and they went from town to town to spread the Word.
You cannot pick-out of The Word of God and obey what you may like and ignore the rest. The Bible is the whole word.
The Bible from beginning to end is so fascinating. I am now studying some of the old sites and ruins. There is so much to learn. Always pray for Wisdom when you pray and read God's word.

If your "Christian" then you should believe everything in the bible, done dada! Not part, not a inkling, not what you want, but the whole thing! When people ask "Christians, what religion are they, they do not say Partly Christian. Its shows that the Bible is full of contradictions. For instance, I'll ask a "Christian," what color was Jesus and they'll say white! WHAT! It doesn't say that in the Bible. Its specifically state he had woolly hair and bronze feet! I have respect for all people and if that is what you wanna believe, then so be it, but believe in it completely!

Wow, you know there are very strong warnings by God himself in the end of the Revelation-22:18 " For I testify to you to everyone who hears the prophecy of the book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of this book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the Holy City, and from the things written in this book."
I agree that a number of Christain denominations are guilty of this- and particularly the JW's - their bible is excerpts from the 1611 King James Version, sans anything to do with the Holy Spirit- they dont recognize God as a Triune God, which I strongly know is wrong because of the wonderful things the Holy Spirit has done in my life.
and again, FOREVER is WAY TOO LONG to be WRONG!~

I can see taking some of it as cultural laws that aren't relevant any more, but I don't see how they justify leaving out the Apocrypha and the Gospel of Mary Magdaleine when they have nearly identical provenance. I also don't understand why they don't go back to a direct translation instead of the deliberately altered texts they use today.

What I am about to write will tell you about what the Bible means. Anyone with a reading ability can read it, and even remember what was said after they read it.
BUT!! To understand what it means, and the ability to put things together requires the Holy Spirit. Without Him, we wouldn't care about it at all.
Jesus explained something to the disciples when they asked him:
10 The disciples came to him and asked, "Why do you speak to the people in parables?" ( Matthew 13 )
Jesus was purposefully speaking in a way that only some would understand. This is what he said:
11 He replied, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. 12 Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. 13 This is why I speak to them in parables:
"Though seeing, they do not see;
though hearing, they do not hear or understand. 14In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah:
" 'You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.
15 For this people's heart has become calloused;
they hardly hear with their ears,
and they have closed their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts
and turn, and I would heal them.' "
He didn't want certain people to understand what he meant by what he said. Anyone walking by could hear him, but unless God wanted them, they wouldn't know what he was talking about, or would not believe what he was saying.
That brings me to answer you question:
"How do Christians justify only believing in certain parts of the bible??"
Some Christians might say that they only believe parts of it. But I don't say that. I believe all of it within the context of what it is written as, and I have read it all.
It's about what to think of the parts of the Bible. That takes study at times, and it takes a concordance or two to see what the experts say, but most of the time it depends on what God's Spirit is telling me. He wakes up that sleepy part of my brain and then I begin to understand what it's supposed to mean.
So I believe it all! And with that I trust God more.

My church has other testaments of Christ, along with the bible. If the gospels that are found(like the DS scrolls) were authenticated, I have no doubt they would be added to our canon...
But it wouldn't just be "they talk about Jesus, they're real" kindof a thing.
