He's TWO. Dont worry, he'll get into MENSA later. Kids often do this. It's just the way they grow and learn. And yeah, they KNOW all things are not monkeys. They also know that you respond to the error, and they think it's funny.
You are probably being played by a very intelligent two year old. Enjoy it while you can.

Don't do anything. Just let a two year old be a two year old. You don't expect him to be a rocket scientist do you? He will learn as he progresses and in time will distinguish all things as they should be. It is much more important for the parent to discipline th child and teach it responsibility than it is to properly identify an animal by its proper name.

Maybe you could find a little inexpensive stuffed animal "monkey" and give it to him. He will make the connection or mental association much easier if he has a reference point to come back to.

When I try to correct my daughter, she will say, "Mommy, I am just pretending."
In other words, play along, let the imagination go!

You can sit with him for fifteen minutes in morning to see pictures of animals and tell names daily. don't worry. Ofcourse you need to give him company for one hour daily. Sing with him, dance with him, visit zoo, play with him etc...

He'll out grow it. My daughter called all animals "dog" when she was two including the elephant at the zoo....it was "a big, big, big, dog".
