I think the painting is of soldiers of WW2, and i believe the soldiers depicted in the painting may be blind.

the responses that i have gotten so far are wonderful but not quite what i was looking for. in more detail its an imagine depicting what i believe to be injured soldiers from either the second or first world war, and they are walking one behind the other, with each successive soldier placing his hand on the shoulder of one to his front. they may be american soldiers

There is one famous piece I know of that fits your description.
It is a painting by Canadian Alex Colville.
It is called 'Infantry near Nijmegen".
Just do a search and you will find it.
